Hey all,
I have a v6 automatic mustang that's completely stock. I'm going to throw an intake on it soon and eventually exhaust, charger, blah blah blah you know the deal. I was wondering do you think i should throw 3.73 gears or 4.10 gears on it. It's my street car and daily drive. I do a bunch of highway driving....60-80mph pretty daily, while commuting. And if I were to get a set of gears, how difficult is the install?

Unless you're a mechanic with a lift or extremely skilled, you cannot install yourself. Theres SO many things that can go wrong when trying to do gear swaps. Usually it costs more than the gears themselves to have them installed. Correct me if I am wrong!

yep fastlane pretty much summerized it. And if you install them incorrectly by the time you figure it out they would be ruined. My car is an auto i got 3.73s on right now ....but the 410 is in my garage waiting to be installed. My mechanic installed the 3.73 like he always does on other stangs (mostly gts with the 8.8 rear) by ear and feel . They were perfect and quiet for 5-6 months then they gradually started whinning ...more and more..until i grew tired and orderd the 4.10s. ANother shop is going to install them now and they are going to actually use the correct tools to measure backlash and all that stuff. If you drive daily at 80 over long periods of time get the 3.73. If most of your driving is city , with little highway, get the 4.10s...you will like em more. Hope this helps

I'd go with the 3.73's, plus a ford t-lock or other limited slip differential. You'll be driving daily, and the 3.73's will give you really good drivability on the street. with out the higher rpms crusing on the hiway. If you check around, local mustang club might be able to reccomned a drive train shop to do the install. I went with the ford dealership, they gave me ford repair warrenty on the setup. If you do go with ford shop, have them order the parts, price is almost the same, but you'll get life time warrenty. Ford factory rep says that this is a solid setup on ford ranger tucks, and will be just fine on the mustang platform. You will need a turner to adjust your speedo. The gears were kind of noisy at first, but after about 2k miles, they quited down some. I would also recomment having the lower control arms replaced, and a strut tower brace and lower a-arm brace installed. BMR's agood supplier and these bolt ons will improve your handling and drivablity.

Check out this http://www.alternativeauto.com/prodserv/v6_05mustang_tune.html

I can only say, they are the best !

Have fun and drive safe.

I do a lot of highway driving too, constantly 65-75mph...so are you guys saying 3.73 gears would be better for someone who does a lot of highway driving vs. 4.10s?

if u are really into performance ...visit the track a lot or are looking for everybit that helps in the prformance department...you can still get away with 4 10 s in th highway.....if not get the 373s.

Scrming said his 4.10's dont make any difference on the highway he get like 24mpg cruising at 75-80mph. 4.10 gears and either T-lok or TrueTrac...T-lok would be my choice.

I bought my LCA's from "hotpart.com" on ebay. They look exactly like others I have seen and cost $89. There were no instructions though, but I can tell you how to assemble the bushings and what end they go in (have photos also) It took me 2 hours from start to all my tools put away to install the LCA's and adjustable panhard par. Now my car goes straignt, but they are noisier.

When i get LCA's scrming reccomended the BMR's, they arent very much if i recall they are $130 and they are supposed to be quieter so that will probably be what i buy.

I got a new "Mustang Enthusiast" mag and they talk about swaping gears for an 8.8 though, but and theres a comment "3.73 are great if you seldom drive on the freeway" so I'm still trying to find out thy those aren't recomended for highway driving......

I drive on the highway all the time with my 3:73's, a few hundred rpm's higher, and gas mileage goes down just a little. With our overdrive it's fine. Not like the 3:73's in my 73 mach 1, which is very uncomfortable on the highway due to the excessivly high rpm's (but damn it's fast)

so it's jus bad for gas milage, not anything that can go wrong mechanicaly even at high RPMs????
BTW I have a manual and sometimes I do some down shifrting from 5th to 3rd to accelerate faster on the highway if that means anything for those larger gears....
