Default '84 Mustang engines

Howdy all. I've got an 84' Mustang sitting in my drive. I'm wanting to get it going again, all it's needing is a Master Cylinder and I can take care of that soon enough. It's engine is a 3.8 V6, which, I realize, is somewhat selling a Mustang short but at this stage, I'm ok with it. The engine runs, but I was warned by the previous owner not to take it too hard, so I'm needing another engine in mind at least. So my question's this:

Will a 3.8 V6 from a Taurus or Continental fit a rear drive mustang? i.e. are the front drive 3.8's the same engine as the rear drive 3.8's? I can come up with a front drive 3.8 pretty easily, but a rear drive 3.8 appears to be more difficult to find. I'm concerned about bell housing pattern, firing order, cooling system connections, motor mount attachment, etc.

I'd appreciate any help on the matter, or a link to a list or something like that. I searched these forums and the web in general, but didn't find anything So either I'm blind, or, I'm just looking in the wrong places.

Thanks,
nemodeller

the front wheel drive 3.8 is different than the rear wheel drive block. personally, if it was my car, I would consider finding a wrecked 94-95 V6 Mustang and swap out everything...EFI, computer, tranny, brakes....

Is that the only thing that'll work? If so, why? And will the 94, 95 engine work with the '84 setup? Or do you have to keep the fuel injection and the electronics in the '84?

Thanks again,
NEModeller

www.moranav6racing.com has everything you need to rebuild that engine into a 200rwhp screamer

cam
pistons
4bbl intake
headers
ported heads
roller rockers ( i believe he has them for your year)
add a 100shot 4bbl plate nitrous system and you have a monster

built right your 84 will run like a raped ape and still give great mileage

no, many things will work..just one option. The problem is that you have a 3.8 with an auto that has a car, that is prone to head gasket issues. You could also swap in a V8

I have the same situation. I have an 83 convertible with the 3.8. I was wondering if the supercharged 3.8 in the tbird would fit. I have a lot of experience with GMs and have crossed over into the Ford camp. I too have had troubles finding anything about the older 3.8s. I see a lot of parts for newer v6s but not the older ones.

the Super Coupe engine will fit. The reason why I recomend getting a 1994-95 would also get you better brakes....

dude the 94-95 cars had the worst headgasket problems.

84's were not half as bad as 88-94's for blowing the gaskets.

the head gasket problem can easily be fixed if it ever happens to it.

my vote is build it with morana parts
