View Full Version : Test Drove 99 Stang (with Fix) Car Felt Slow???
Slingshot 08-08-2004, 10:44 PM I test drove a bone stock 99 Cobra today, and it felt a lot slower than I had imagined.
This car has the horsepower fix. I saw the sticker in the engine bay.
Is there anything else that would sap power from the car? Or is it just that I dont know how to drive it right yet??
The car seems to be in excellent shape. It has 42K on it.
What RPM are these magazine guys launching at to pull high 13's in these things? My last car was a mid-13-second WRX, which felt much faster. I'm hoping I just need to get used to the car.
Was anybody else initially disappointed with their Cobra's power?
Also, does anybody have a dyno plot from a stock 99-01 Cobra?
jdaniel 08-08-2004, 11:31 PM The 99 Cobra come with 320 hp at the flywheel if im not mistaken. If you take away the drivetrain loss you equal out about 272hp to the rear wheels. They aren't that great at all. I dyno'd mine at 276 RWHP.
Slingshot 08-09-2004, 01:48 AM Ok.
I'm hoping I'm just jaded.
I drove a 350Z Track edition, which runs almost exactly the same accel times, and it felt pretty slow.
nomocobra 08-09-2004, 02:37 PM a high 13sec car shouldnt really feel "fast", because thats really not fast:D

It didn't feel like a high-13's car.
But everybody is telling me you have to beat the dogsh!t out of these things to make them go, and that it's because of the stock gearing.
I'm thinking I'd better switch to 4.10's.

Slingshot 08-11-2004, 12:19 AM Two words......
Traction Control.....was on....The traction contro....You get the idea.
I bought the car tonight. It's pretty sick.
Definately needs some suspension mods, but I love it already.
I'm gonna go look at it right now.
nomocobra 08-11-2004, 04:59 PM post some pics man.
Slingshot 08-11-2004, 08:21 PM This is the picture from the Auto Trader ad.

nomocobra 08-12-2004, 01:46 AM very nice man. but you need to lower it! it looks like a 4X4:D
blueangelfightr 09-12-2004, 11:20 PM Very nice car now i'm jealous.
SexyFStreetRacer 10-24-2004, 02:42 AM On a stock 99 cobra covertible--- Book shows it should reach 0-60 in 5.4 seconds... doing the quartermile in 13.8 seconds @ 102 mph... however that is also rated on factory street tires.... Horsepower is 316 @ 6000rpm...Torgue is 316lb.-ft. @ 4750rpm...Redline is 6800rpm (fuel shutoff at 7000rpm... factory gear ratio's as follows:
Gear--- Ratio---Speed
1st 3.37 72mph
2nd 1.99 77mph
3rd 1.33 115mph
4th 1.00 152mph
5th 0.67 wont list
reverse 3.22
Top speed stated is 150mph..... However i say tell that to the cop that clocked me doing 165 down Rock road....lol .... very small and cheap changes trust me, it can run much faster..... and at the time it was still stock... so goodluck..... april
93HKS300Z 10-24-2004, 03:49 AM 72 in first gear and 77 in second gear.....that doesn't sound like very good gear ratios to me.....
93HKS300Z 10-24-2004, 03:51 AM so ur sayin that that car does its 0-60's all in first gear... theres not enough power to have such a long gear
TBlake 10-24-2004, 12:54 PM hey, the '99s may not have as much potential as the '03s and '04s, but you can definately make them a quick car. I had mine dynoed at 400.8 hp a couple of weeks ago.............after a "few" mods :) I haven't run it in the quarter yet, but I am going to take it to Baytown this week. I will have a time after that. Of course, I am a shatty driver, so my time may not reflect the car's potential............you definitely need to lower it though!!!
TBlake 10-24-2004, 01:25 PM how much are they asking for they asking for the car?

Cobra's are quick....Don't you fool yourself.....It's a mid to high 13 second car...and if that doesn't feel quick to you...then i'm sorry. Unlike the 99+ GT's the 99 and up cobras have a killer topend...

Any questions? LOL..:D
nanaki 11-05-2004, 10:32 AM your wrx probably felt faster cause it's AWD. my buddy's stealth rt tt even when it was bone stock felt like it was a monster from the take off. also just love the way the turbo grabs ya at about 3k and just pulls you back to the seat. those cars are just as fast as 99+ GT though i believe. never raced him, he sold it and bought a mid 11s mitsubishi mirage car. looks like a total sh!t box, but it's a fast lil bugger for only $3k!
50FastFord 01-19-2005, 04:41 PM My 99 Cobra has plenty of boogy in its rear, I t definetley isnt high 13s, i bet lows witht he 4:10 gears etc etc...
