Default Painting my pony grille emblem...

Since the painted ponies on autobadges.com and other websites cost over $150, I've decided to paint my own pony.
It is chrome right now, but it issn't aging too well--it has little chips in the chrome on the body and looks bad from close range, but good from far away
I think I'm going to do a 2-tone chrome/black pony
What should I do before painting this?
I've washed it off thoroughly, but should I take the chrome off of where I'm going to paint? Or will I be fine just going over it?
Aslo, any suggestions on coloring it in? Im thinking leave the head chrome, then fade into a black body/legs

I have never done this but I think you need to rough up the surface real good. Engine enamel will probably stick to it. The caliper and high heat ceramic paint seems to stick well to metal too.
Talk to a body shop that does custom work. Sometimes they paint over chromed bumpers to make them the same color as the car's body

Good luck

i'd go over it (not sure whether with or without hte chrome) with an SOS pad, to get off any glazing or whatnot, and rough up the surface to allow the paint to really adhere. I agreee with the previous post, use some high-temp hardcore paint! Post up some pics when you're done! GOOD LUCK!

Actually, I am trying to get my pony off the grille but can't find the tork head bit to remove the screws . 4 auto part stores do not carry that type of bit

What did you guys use ?

the grill is held on by some hex headed bolts, use a socket wrench. the pony is snapped in w/ a bunch of little metal fasteners that you can kinda pop off w/ a small knife.

If this is your first shot at customizing, maybe you should go to a wreakers & grab another pony badge to try your customizing on?? That way you can relax more about whatever you want to try, cause you still have the origingal in good condition?
