racing with nitrous

besides the cobra i also own a 2000 v6 3.8 im using nitrous 120 shot on 87 unleaded i was thinking about using like 91 and mixing in alitle 101 in with it or just strait 101 octaine but im not sure if this would be harmful considering the car only wants 87 but im using nitrous can someone help me out here thanks?

Are you using a wet or dry kit. Not much experience with the 3.8, but a rule of thumb generally is that you want to back the timing off a couple of degrees and increase the octane rating. Your car would be fine with 93 octane, but I definitely would not be spraying on 87. You can probably get away with it for a while or you'll hear stories of some guy who knows some guy who sprayed a 200 shot on 86 octane for five years straight and never had a single problem, but I would not risk it. Besides, you got a Cobra now, put that kit on the snake and put the Sixer on daily driving duty.

use 91. if you use nitrous or advance timing or anything you NEED at least 91 (i try to get 93 as much as possible). 101 is overkill. i assume you are running the 120 shot on the cobra, because a v6 on 87 octane +120 shot would be in peices right now.... (unless u are at -40 degrees of timing or something stupid.....) either way, use premium. i dont care if the car manual says 87. higher octane gas will never hurt an engine, it will only hurt your wallet. If you have been running 87 i bet you are right around stock power when you spray. what can happen is your knock sensors freak out and start pulling timing out of your engine. so when you hit the nitrous you will feel the bump, but it will go away and u will have normal accelleration because your timing is waaaaaaaaay back. run premium any time you plan on spraying or one time u will definitly fry someting, and you will have oodles more power when you do.

the nitrous is giving me 75 horses and 130ftlbs torque i had this since mid or early july and ive been using 87 but i only spray it like once or twice on the weekend and so far it has caused me any problems,or deceleration i can still keep up with some 8s that are stock but sence u have told me this im going to switch to 93 from now on.

That summer heat is probably one contributing factor for your car holding up as well as it has. Cool fall air will lean you out big time.

When you are not on the spray continue using 87. Your car will run better and make its optimum power. Remember more octane means less gasoline in the fuel mixture. Higher octane provides a smaller explosion in the combustion chamber and therefore slows the fuel burn. Your stock tune with timing expects an explosion to occur in a certain amount of time.

One other thing
If you feel as though you will be spraying more frequently now that you'll be running 93, then you might look into getting a step colder sparkplug as well for added insurance.

its not got its stock tune it was retuned by the guy that hooked up my nitrous.
