I was told by my motul dealer that the reason why most automanufacturers use 5w-20 is because it is less viscousity and gives higher mpg but at the cost of long term protection. I was recommended to switch to 5w-30. Anyone else has any imput on this?

I was specifically told by the distributor the only reason they do it is because of incentives for better mpg. Thinner oil means less resistance between moving parts = higher efficiency which then transforms into higher mpg. He said that 5w-20 is good for fuel efficiency but it does not protect the motor adequately and if I was planning on having the motor for the long run I should switch to 5w-30. Any other opinions?

I'm using 5-30. I was also told by my tuner and my FORD DEALER to stay clear from that 5-20 crap. I'm glad I am not the only one that was told this.

They have a lot of 5W-20.

I'm sticking with 5-20 in the Mustang. If you use synthetic and change regularly, the oil will hold up, so shooting for a wear range for the oil isn't something you have to worry about. I use 10-30 synthetic in all my other cars even though it's not recommended for them, but none of them are nearly as sophisticated as my 4.6 3V.

I understand but It is also a fact that ford selected the 5w-20 to get into the incentives the goverment gives for higher mpg cars.

I seriously doubt Ford would recommend an oil weight that was going to cause problems with their flagship auto just to meet a number. What are we talking? 0.05 MPG? If it were that easy, everyone would be making engines to run on helium weight oil. Anyway, I doubt 5-30 would cause a problem either, so go with it.

Well the dealer told me it was to get some incentives the goverment was offering for higher mpg engines. Dont know like 3-4 oil dealers have told me that already. What do you all run on your mustangs?
