I am going to check out a 1987 saleen for sale and i was wondering if anyone knows a way i can find out if it isreally a saleen. Like by the vin#or someother way.The guy who is selling it says it doesn't have the body kit on it any more and that he broke offthe saleen emblem. Alsohe doesn't have the saleen documentation anymore. Alsohe said it ran 12.5 in the 1/4 and is very modded and only wants $3800for it. <SPAN class=smText>

Its probably not a real saleen. Who would break the emblem off? And convenient that he lost the paper work too. Real Saleens do change the vin. Contact a saleen dealer for more info though

I don't think its a real Saleen either, because if he doesn't have the documents then its probably fake. And the price is way too low for a Saleen Mustang. Well ask for the VIN and look it up as brockleew said

does it really matter if it's REALLY a saleen? i mean it would be cool to say HEY I HAVE A REAL SALEEN!

It turns out it isn't a saleen. I got the vin and called saleen performance in california and they ran it throught the computer and its just a 87 hatchback. I told the owner and he didn't want to go down on the price even though it's not a saleen. The car isn't in very good shape so im going to pass on it. Thanks for the info.</P>

hey its a little late to tell you this but on the foxbody saleens you cannot tell if they are a real saleen or not just by checking the vin #. You see all foxbody saleens were just regular LX mustangs despite what you may hear saleen never changed the vin # on these cars. if you run the vin on the car it will always come back as being an LX 5.0. Saleen took delivery of these cars and did the following: 5 lug conversion, carerra suspension, subframe connectors, s-trim supercharger from vortech(optional), a small number sticker on the front left of the bumper, saleen 4 wheel disc brakes, saleen window banner, saleen ground effects, saleen exhuast, recarro seats, saleen plaque on the console in the front of the shifter with the same number designation as appeared on the bumper, front strut tower bar, the 87 saleen also had "saleen mustang" stitched on the interior door panels, saleen graphics running from the front spoiler along the side ground effectsto the rear bumper that were available in blue or gray(you could also get this car with a factory delete option which deleted these graphics), saleen wheels either a mesh BBS looking wheel or a five spoke cookie cutterdark grey wheel (both wheels had saleen center caps with the "s" logo),saleen alsoput an id tag on the inside of the hatchback but i cant remember where exactly i think on my 93 saleen its over near the right upper corner, i belive the rear gear ratio remained the same as it was in its stock LX platform unless it was supercharged.</P>

saleen built the car in a hatchback, coupe, and convertableversion(if the cars a coupe or convertable im not sure where the id plate is in the trunk) but if hes still got the car re check what i told you, because you cannot rely on the vin number alone for fox body saleens despite what others have told you. I think the car may be fake though because he said he took the saleen emblems off and the 87 foxbody saleens did not have any emblems on the exterior. just a number and optional vinyl graphics. I wish i could have replied to your postearlier but i just joined today. If the cars been heavily moded most of the saleen equipment will be gone but look for the console plaque and that id tag! I hope i was helpful.</P>

Nothing wrong with making a car look good, but I think its cheezy to pass off a car as something it isnt, like when people get saleen stickers and put it all over their ride, that just is not tight. Hey put saleen parts all over it if you want, but dont try to make people think its real. Thats my opinion anyways.</P>

sell the 88 stang and buy a real 88 saleen. you can buy them for as little as $10,000 in good condition. the only reason i say this is because your taking a non v8 stang and trying to turn it into a v8 car. First plan on spending alot of money and time just to pull that off. Its not just a question of dropping a v8 in the car. You are also going to have to swap the rear end and tranny out for ones that are suited to handle a v8. Your looking at spending up to a couple thousand plus the cost of a v8. If you do get that far with it then you actually have to look at the cost of making it a into a "saleen". Theres more to a saleen than just stickers and a body kit.(read my earlier reply under this post). Alot of these parts arent even manufactured anymore. The only way to buy them is to find them N.O.S. or used. When you do find them look at paying mega $$$ cause these people know what the have and it aint goin cheap! The most expensive part of building an early model saleen is the suspension and extra stiffening mods to the frame you can look at spending a cool 7gs just to get the car set up with the careera suspension (which has to be ordered directly from carrera at there company at Charlotte Motor Speedway in N.C.)subframe connectors and strut tower bars. The engine in foxbody saleens was untouched unless it was an SC or SSC. So no caost there. Then you also need to look at wheels. The 88 saleen came with a 5 spoke cookie cutter looking wheel that i believe American Racing manufactured for them. You can expect to pay $1,200-$2,000 for a set of these in fair to excellent condition. Then theres your graphics. These are no longer manufactured. I know a man who has a couple of sets of these N.O.S. and wants $175 for each side set so thats $350 for the side stripe graphics. Then you need a deck lid sticker($25) and a window banner ($30). Now comes the interior. The 88 saleen had special door panel inserts i doubt youll ever find these. You can buy the gauge panel background N.O.S. i have no idea what this will cost either. Then theres the shift knob, seats(good luck), and floormats which can also be purchased. You will be missing your saleen id number on your front right bumper because they dont make these and your center console plaque which is kinda like a saleen vin tag. They also put id tags on the firewall and rear declid. Missing these items is a dead givaway the car is fake. Finally your gonna be looking at spending around $2,000 for the saleen ground effects and spoilerplus the cost of a good paint job. So all in all your looking at spending more than $20,000 to convert your car. Thats piontless when you could sell it and buy a real one for less than that. Hell i only paid $21,000 for my 93 saleen that was like brand new with only 4,200 miles on it. If your interested in getting a real foxbody saleen go to www.performanceautosport.com (http://www.performanceautosport.com) and look around. I know the guyMark Lamaskinwho owns this company and he can locate any saleen you want. Next to Steve Saleen mark is one of the most knowledgeable people on these cars. Whatever you do i wish you the best of luck.

ha ha this is kinda off the topic but i worked at adealership and right before i left a 2003 mustang came in. this kid brought it in for a trade-in. he told them that it was a saleen so before they checked they gave him the money.but the car was really a gt lol so the kid got away with it cause it was too late. the funny part is that the car looked completly like a gt,all it had were the stickers of a saleen and the wing lol it was great. <edited><editID>stang-a-tang</editID><editDate>37898.7927083333</editDate></edited>

to 88SaleenStang I say make it look like a Saleen, but custom tailor certain aspects to your liking. A different hood, different rims, different wing, etc. A Saleen kit with a different wing and side exhaust could be unique and cool, just as an example.

I searched for my car and joined a couple of saleen newsgroups. I really had to educate myself on the cars and the next thing you know I was meeting Saleen collectors. My wife found the car after being dragged to shows etc she found this car in a local apartment complex and begin the buying process before she even called me. Getting a saleen was our focus and now we are in search of a 65 Fatsback to add to our collection of mustangs.<IMG src=smileys/smiley16.gif border="0">

there are several ways to find if it is a true saleen.

.saleen gauges
.under hood there will be a stamp of some sort not really sure of location.
.saleen seats
.saleen stickers, all saleen's have their own number, none of them are the same.
.saleen rims.

there is alot more.

who would mess up a saleen and take off the bodykit and it is kinda funny how the emblem broke off and the papers are missing, sounds like a fake.<edited><editID>davis83</editID><editDate>37916.0449421296</editDate></edited>

Im not sure of the newer model years, but alot of off base answers here.</P>

First stickers mean nothing. Look for the obvious.. Saleen calipers, racecraft suspension, and the plaque on the shifter area and the one under hood on the firewall. I have seen a hundred fakes and they all look super smooth, in fact my friend bought one and was totally misled (a crime by the way). Look to the things people wouldnt change... also, if you contact the saleen owners and Enthusiast chairwoman, she will help you out in an instant. She is an encyclopedia of Saleen knowledge. Again, stickers can be bought at any local joe shmoe so get on track with that. Look for the Plaques which contain build date, location, and Vin. If he aint got them hes full of s**t !!!!!!</P>

Good luck man!</P>

Hey guys as I was reading the forums I wanted to ask yall some ?'s aboutthe saleen. Yes, I do own one and by the way I'm still paying for it , real expensive too. I have a 2002Mustang Saleen s-281 couple not supercharged and I have been wanting a saleen ever since I new about them. Now that I have one I enjoy it every bit of it. There was a thought in my head, do people really know what saleens are, other than just looks. This kid asked me if it was a "real Saleen" and I told him yes, then he told me to pop up the hood to c it inside, so I did. After looking at it he said it was a regular mustang gt. My mind just went blank and I couldn't say anything other than just stay quiet, but we were in a hurry so he took off. I said to my self that it could not be true and he just got me to think about my car more. Please answer back any one . THANKS

hey man i own a 00 saleen s-281! saleen is not jus a mustang gt saleen adds body kit, tons of suspension mods (racecraft). plus they add power pulley, powerflash feul calibration, and borla catback exhaust, along with the choice of,3:08, 3:27, or 3:55 rear end gears! so next time some kid says that crap to u put that in his face!

Thanks you guys(s-28100, jugador) I know now more of what I carry in my car. Oh by the way what do yall think of the superchargers that the saleen dealers have, there about $3,500. I wanted to buy one but this worker that works at ford told me that you can get a cheaper one for have the price or so and it stills puts out the same hp. He also told that saleen dealers , all I'm buying is just the brand off of it. I do and I don't want to put a s/c because I want to keep it original but then again people say it's just a saleen and with no s/c and that's why I want to add the s/c. Oh by the way the kid does not bother me no more now that I heard from yall, but it just got me to think a little. Thanks
