Hi guys, my names Joe, I'm 17, and I need some help from people who have spent some time and money into a classic 'Stang. I posted a couple topics earlier about the Mustang I was getting.
I'm still trying to decide if I should get this or gear for something economical. Being 17, I'm not sure how much Insurance is gonna run me.
The Car: 66 Mustang Coupe, 289 V8 w/ 10K Miles - Has some reported break pressure problems from the owner. Needs Massive Cosmetic work on the interior ( no idea how much that'll run me, was hoping for Leather, Black on Black ) and I plain on painting it Black ( got an estimate for paint...$1500, Life Time Guarantee )
This guy wants $5,000 for it. Going to actually see the car in a couple of days with my dad.

Zman, looks like a nice car with plenty of potential. Id search ther floor pans and framerails especially for rust. It seems it has a good lean to it so you may need to replace some of the suspension, but that wont be too bad. I say go for it, but leave the paint alone till you have all the other things out of the way.
And that last pic looks like a bulldog on a leash lol
Congratulations Joe, looks like a very nice car, my opinion is that you work first on the safe issues such as brakes, steering, cooling and solve the presure problems that you mention so you can drive and enjoy the car, the cosmetics can be done slowly according with your economic resorces..I think that will look very nice on Black or maybe you like to keep it as close to the original and painted the color that shows in the factory tag, the choise is yours.
Does that price seem reasonable to you guys? Or does this really depend on the condition? I have yet to see the car in person as its 2 hours away from me.
My dad was a mechanic for 10 years and owned an auto parts store for a while so I'm hoping anything beyond repair he'll be able to spot.

seems kinda high for a coupe? whats with the chain did they have to drag it out of the garage cause the breaks are locked up? or is he afraid someones gonna steal it?

I was wondering the same thing about the chain. From what I can tell from the pictures, there seems to be very litte if any rust issues. And because it is a V8 car, I would buy it for 5K. Get it put into your father's name, and just add you to his insurance policy.

The only leash I have is in electronic form :p Curse the inventor of cell phones! :-D
On a lighter note - that interior ( just from the pics ) is not that shabby. Little elbow grease and some material and you're back in business.
Those one-off snazy hub caps have gotta go tho -

Looks like a decent car. As mentioned previously, search for hidden rust issues in the floorpans and subframes.
The 289 can be tuned to get pretty good gas mileage. You won't be heading towards 30mpg without a heck of a FI system, but 20's are definitely possible if you learn to tune the carb and ignition.
As for the odo...the far left digit will be offset a little if it has rolled past 100k miles. I'd verify that the engine only has 10k miles...and what was done to the engine during the rebuild.

I just felt my stomach get lighter ; ) You have no idea how good it is to hear you say that Colorado. My sister drives a '96 Suburban which gets about 12mpg.

As for the chain, it could go either way lol. I was told that the car IS running and is driveable. Pretty sure its kept outside too so the chain may be the anti-theft system of the late 60's. The Height: I haven't been around enough Coupes to actually notice this rmod....hope its not a problem.
The Wheels THEY WILL STAY AS IS! haha...I get it. I dont care for them either, the bonfire is at 6. My dad suggested Krieger Wheels - he's gettin all pumped about this project. Any other suggestions? I was pushing for something w/ the Mustang Emblem on it. Anyone got a pic of the Stock Wheels?
The last thing to address..the Engine. From what I was told, he sent the engine somewhere ( Ford perhaps? ) for one reason or the other. They lost his engine, and sent him a new one. He then told me he put 10K miles on the new one. He claims to have bought the car for $12,000 w/ the Intention of restoring it and lost passion for the project. Heh...this is the kicker....I mean this is great.
Upon doing some work under the hood and buying a chrome dress-up kit, he forgot to bolt the battery back down and had it go into his fan ( I dont know much about cars...is this a radiator fan or something? ) sending battery acid all over the chrome. No idea what the engine looks like now. he just told me to buy another kit... I' isn't no think'in ma'yan...bu' I reckon 'tis guy is an idiot. The look on my Dad's face when I told him this was priceless.
Thats about it, all I know about the car.
I want to thank everybody again for your responses, the support here is tremendous.
Thanks a bunch, - Joe

looks like a good project too me! but be sure and find all the rust issues. now thinking about it, ive seen a few remodled cars that didnt look as good as you car does now!
in fact i once looked at a totally so called redone 66 fastback that had been painted with a paintbrush. i just about died laughing! but i kept it to myself.
IMO, do not buy this car. I bought my car when I was 16 for $5000. It had a rebuilt 289 and restored interior, I just had to paint it. Run away from this one and keep looking, you can get much better for your money.

5000 bucks for a car that is driveable, v8, good body(as far as i can see) an a newish engine i would say is worth it. I guess im canadian and 5000 isn't as much becuase i would be all over that car up here. As far as your intentions with the interior i have a the black interior, original is vinal also, NOT FUN IF LEFT IN THE SUN!!! my back is proof of this, but imo i still love the black. To redo the interior it cost me like 3500 but i didn;t go completely stock and i did all the work myself. Welcome to the forum, and for a young gun like my self these guys know a lot of info thats insanely helpful definately listen.
I just bought a 68' and it is much worse ( cosmedicaly ) condition. the body is in perfect condition, but there is NO interrior. i paid $2125 for mine.
