Default Yes, another cam question...

Hi people,

I desperately need help with camshaft selection. I am hoping that somebody out there has experience with something close to my combination...

Here's what I've got...

1. '69 351w block with stock 4V flat tops. Stock depth/size valve reliefs.
2. Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum cylinder heads P/N 60259. 2.02" intake valves and 1.60" exhaust valves.
3. Comp Cams magnum roller rockers 1.6:1 ratio.
4. Comp Cams hardened pushrods stock length for 351W.
5. Comp Cams hydraulic lifters.

If you have close to this set-up, you probably already have figured out that I need to know what is the maximum valve lift I can use with the 2.02" valves with the '69 pistons (without valve-to-piston clearance issues)? If someone can tell me lift limitations, I can then narrow the field in cam selection.

Please feel free to share your ideas!

Oh Yeah, I forgot to mention that I'm already running the above combination with a camshaft measuring at .470" valve lift... runs fast, but I need more !

Most stock pistons have clearance issues with 2.02 valves regardless of lift.
you will definately want to check it.

You want a cam with a lot of duration. Check comp cams, call and talk to them see what they recommend

When you call comp cams make sure they know what lifter you have and what year your block is.

Depending on the lifters you have, you may need a small base circle cam.

I agree with the bigger is better approach to 351w cams.
I am not sure how much would clear the piston though.

I would like to hear what you go with though.

Thanks Guys! I filled out a camshaft request form, online on the Comp Cams website. I'm still waiting for a recommendation from them.

Still, is there anyone out there who's already dealt with this? Anyone with a proven set-up?

When Comp Cams responds, I'll definately keep you all up to date! Thanks again!

r.barn,

I believe that the duration of my current camshaft is 270deg. Any suggestions for duration on my daily driver? Are we thinking maybe, longer duration and close or equal to the same lift? How, would longer duration effect performance versus higher lift if I chose to go that route?

BEST thing is a custom cam, made for your exact set-up and wants

My current cam in the 408w is a 280 @ .006"
I dreamed up the specs on it and had Comp Cams grind it.
I could have done better by going more lift & duration. Up to 300 at .006 seems to be good for power, but I don't know how it will idle. I figure the tweecer can tame it as long as I don't get too carried away.

It is pretty docile and I was running it as a daily driver for about 10k miles.
That sure made the commute nice.

Hope that helps a little more.

Thanks again!! You guys are a huge help. I'm checking out that link for Camshaft Innovations for sure, r.barn. When I have all my stuff together, I'll update.

In the meantime, it would be great to keep it comming. Including anyone else out there!

Thanks again and again.

BTW...

My ride is a '79 pacecar with the above motor mods, including BBK longtubes, T5 tranny, 8.8 rear, Cragar Protecs and more...

Have a great long Weekend!

Hey guys and gals,

Well I had a very interesting weekend... Long story short, Me and my family were headed on a camping trip in the 'stang when my clutch cable broke. Anyways, another Mustang loyal pulled over to help and had a spare cable a couple of blocks away in his garage! He had a very serious 88gt powered by the same '69 351 I'm running.

The story applies to this post here...

We discussed cam selection for my combination and he has run Ford Racing Camshaft Part# M-6250-A351, with at least the minimum clearance of .090"-.100" without any modification to the stock valve reliefs. The camshaft measures at .520" intake lift and .538" exhaust! He is positive that the camshaft fit. I may not necessarily run this camshaft, but it does give me a good idea of valve lift limitations.

Anyone want to comment? Anyone know different?

Indy
