Default E engine prob, caution!

Hi all...long-time reader here but newer to posting. Just wanted to pass along my nightmare story re: my 02 Extreme (#21). Always had a persistent oil leak...more of a annoying drip that left 2-3 dime size drops everywhere. Total only added up to about a quart over 2 1/2 years (since I owned it). Took to a great mechanic who began exploring the problem. Result: NO gaskets for timing chain cover and housing where oil filter screws into. Instead, the crack team of Saleen engine builders used about 3 tubes of "goop" and then bolted on the parts. High heat and time caused breakdown and thus the leaks. Recap: $24 in gaskets and a week labor cost me $609 for Saleens fault! [:@]

I'll cut them a break (maybe).....History (from Liz) shows my E was one of the four shown at NY Int'l show. Somehow it got sold and then I picked it up a bit later. Maybe they just threw it together for the show. Even still, other E or any Saleen owner should be aware of possible issues. Anyway, great set of forums and I'll watch for comments and other topics.

You said somehow it got sold. I'm wondering if the person that had it before you blew the motor and had to rebuild it (and maybe cheaply) before you bought it.

Hum, never used any oil other than the small leak?......every engine I've ever had uses oil (as they should) during normal operation. I've already added about 1/2 quart to my '06 EXTREME with only 2,200 miles on it (changed oil at 500 miles to synthetic). My Viper uses about a quart every 2-3K of driving. My Jeep GC with the 500hp S/C engine also uses oil at about the same rate. Even my '93 Honda uses oil at that rate.

From what I've read, if the engine doesn't burn/use some oil, its not working right. So far, so good.

Sorry for your bad experience and hope they've learned from these bad moments.

Original set-up/engine, etc. Weird story....Shown at NY Int'l show, sent over to a Long Island dealership, sold to a guy who only had it a few months before Ford Lease/Credit got it back. Guy claimed he was disabled on the job, couldn't pay, and gave it back. Title is clean (no repo). Car was sent to a place near Carlisle for auction and sat for over 8 months. Broker sold this car (to me) and other high end cars in the warehouse.

Everything else seems to check out in the engine. We pulled or opened everything to check for damage. None found. Just the "no gasket" issue. Ya'll said your engines naturally burn oil....true to a point, but all my vehicles have never needed more than a top off between oil changes.
