im buying an 88 or 89 GT 5.0, looking around i've already gathered some info, gears, exhaust, subframe, heads are some things to start with what else would be good to start with, is there anything to do for free to bump up the hp, ive heard about removing smog stuff, what are these things to remove? i live in oklahoma so inspections arent a problem. what is good to remove besides rear seats for weight savings? ive got an rci 16 gal tank sitting around, would it be worth the time to put it in and remove the old tank? also if it has over 100,000 miles would it be wise to rebuild, to a 306, and do all of the internal work while im in there then concentrate on bolt-ons? For these mods about how much can i expect to spend, and if you could please include brands, or where to get the parts. sorry its so long!! thanks in advance for any help

Alright, let's break it down:
1)Free hp: take out air silencer in pass fender, take out screen in MAF, advance timing to 14*. Lucky, you don't have emmissions, you can remove smog pump below alternator and all hosing from there to h-pipe, that will add 2-5 hp alone. tune up; i.e. spark plugs, wires, cap/rotor, clean throttle body, clean maf.
2)weight savings: remove rear seat, spare tire, low gas level at track. Mustangs already have a 15.4 gal tank, so the only reason to switch is if the one you have is lighter than stock
3)engine: 5.0's are very, very reliable, 100K miles is just starting to break in!! Pull a spark plug to see how engine looks, let's you know if running lean/rich
4) Bolt ons: If the car is gonna be at the track and you want the best possible times, I would start with suspension. I've seen/heard of BONE STOCK 5.0's going 12's with suspension upgrades and a good driver. Traction is the key. If it's gonna be a street car, I'd go with gears, subframes, exhaust, pullies, etc. As far as listing out some brands and prices, there's so many, you're just gonna have to do more research!!
