96 GT Tranny Noise

my 96 gt's tranny has started making a "whirring" noise that gets progressively louder as RPM's decrease. I've checked the fluid level, it's fine. I have a pro 5.0 shifter in it, but i set the stop bolts correctly so i don't think that's the problem. the tranny only has 70,000 miles on it, but could it already be the input or output shaft bearings? If not, then is it normal wear?

There are two possibilities for your problem. One is the shaft bearing, but if those are out, it's more of a knocking noise. But the other possibility, it's possible that "dust" can get caught inside of the clutch plates and cause a whirring sound that you might be experiencing.

It has been making some occasional knocking noises too. If the bearings go, do you think i should go ahead and rebuild the whole tranny, or just get a new one? which would be cheaper?

i'd go aftermarket if my trans went... get the t56 there is a good trans lol...

ya a new tranny would be cheaper in the long run. 6 months after your rebuild, you will be right back were you are

yup... same thing happened with my truck.. not too long after the rebuild well thing was shifiting hard and leaking like a b****....

i just think it's kinda odd that the bearings are going at 70,000 miles...i mean this car has been BABIED. I'm a freshman in college and gettin a new tranny is just so expensive. but oh well i see yall's point.

if you have a job, or some kind of income, then i would just set a little aside every check for tranny fund. good luck

A t-5 rebuild is not that tough to do by yourself if you take your time and pay attention. Read up on it first then go for it. Its amazing what you can learn from a book

Yea but this is the perfect oopurtunity to upgrade to a btter trany!!!! think about it...
