Default drum and pads look like mountain range

ive been working on putting on the granada discs in the front and i just finished all the steps so now i just gotta bleed my brakes. so i pulled off my rear drivers side tire and figured i would check out the condition that the brakes were in. I was told they had been done when the car was brought up fron cally in 02. After a little bit of a struggle with getting the drum off i made one of the most heart breaking discoveries, not only was there a nail in my new 255,40,18s, my drum and pads had this little style going on ^^^^^^^^^^ instead of the traditional flat[:@]. Not to bad just replace the drum and shoes but i was wondering how this happens ive never heard of it?

It's natural for this to occur over time, If you don't turn the drums when the shoes are replaced it will accelerate this type of wear.
On the positive side, you actually get more surface area . Usually though, it makes for a slightly grabby brake.
Have the drums mic'd to see if they can be turned and stay within limits.
BTW: I am a firm believer of doing both sides to maintain equal braking.
YMMV,

Spend the couple of extra bucks and replace the wheel cylinders $12-$15 and also the spring kits. It can save you trouble down the road. Good Luck!
