I was considering exhaust cutouts. Im thinking about the Mr. Gasket cutout with the cable for remote operation. I'd really prefer straight pipes but cant afford to get any tickets at the time. I was just curious if i mount them right in front of the catalitic converters, will the complete lack of back pressure cause problems or not? i have heard that some back pressure is needed, but id like other opinions. I can get the cutouts for $40 from Jegs. I know a guy with a muffler shop that can install them pretty much free.

Im just wondering what everybody else thinks.

Backpressure..I hate that word!

No, backpressure is NOT needed at all. In fact, it's one of your worst enemies.

Alright they are going to be ordered tonight. Now i'll be able to blow those ricers off the road without even being in gear j/k. From what i've read, up to 15% hp increase is possible from stock, but i doubt it will be that much w/out headers.

yeah...apparently its "exhaust velocity" thats necessary (as i saw in an argument that the jeepster had or something).

A friend of mine put a single exhaust cut-out before his cat, he had edelbrock headers...he dyno'd an extra 22RWHP & 8RWTQ with the cut-out open.

Think about it....everything you do to this air pump known as a motor revolves around getting air in and out faster and more effeciently.

Backpressure is just what it sounds like, the exhaust being restricted and causing the motor to be "choked". How can this possibly be helpful?

Kyle, I'd have the dumps welded right after the cats (so E-check can't rag on ya), or if you wanna play it risky, before the cats. It'll be like open headers.

Hey thanks everybody.

Dan02gt, that gain is awesome, I dont have headers now but i 'd be happy with anything close to that.

Jeep, ya, im not sure where im going to put them yet. I know the people who do the e-check around here are normally dumbasses who couldnt care less if the car passed or fails. i think about it.

For the money, if you can deal with the noise.....it's the BEST bang for the buck mod available. I did the math with my friends HP gain and it was alittle over $1.30 per HP...awesome deal if you ask me! Hahaha

why not save up for some long tubes and  then just leave them where they can be uncaped easy?  instead  of spending 40 now spend a little more later and really blow those ricers away>

Buzzstang...i would love to get longtubes, but being in highschool, money isnt that easy to come by. I plan on getting headers in maybe a year or so, but for now, the cutouts are the best i can do.

it is not easier to say than to do.  if you would really want the headers then just save and get them.  let the ricers talk and run their mouths when you know it will just be a matter of time before they will get very familar with your rear bumper not just a loud car.  setting at a light and revving up you engine is what ricers do.  the loud exhaust is ok but if you have nothing to back it up what is the point.  what is a ricer- usually a loud car with nothing to back it up.

He's still in highschool. I would imagine your not...so if you remember being in highschool, $500 dollars is hard to come by, if not impossible for some kids.

Regardless, with or without headers, shorties or longtubes..with the cut-outs he WILL see a respectable amount of HP gain, not a 2-3hp figure either.

yes i remeber high school.  thatg was the beginning.  87 ford ranger lowered, ground efx, 306 aluminum heads, c-4 with a neal chance converter, it was wild and looked great i still have that truck setting in the garage.  it is getting a 351w fuel injected, cobra intake, and get this a five speed. it has been a long time in the makeing.  i bought this truck from the money i made housing tobacco.  if anybody would like to help this year spots are avail.

For under $100 bucks for parts & installation, you can expect 20hp.

For $600 bucks (not including installation, plug change, premium fuel & octane boost)...for the low budget driver a cut-out is a more feasable mod for the highschool boy ;)

I know nitrous is gods gift to man. The first $800 I collect will be going to a kit & installation.
