View Full Version : Front Door Speakers
SOLDSHORT 08-13-2006, 06:45 PM I know some people have replaced the front door speakers on their cars.
What did you use? What do I need to use to keep the factory look, i really don't want to have to mount tweeters.

they fit right into the factory location?
drbobvs 08-13-2006, 07:17 PM Yep. I replaced all 4. HAd to bend up one tab on each.

d_man777 08-13-2006, 10:58 PM Can't speak for drbob, but those are what I used. Just put in the back pair today. They sound better than stock, but I still think the H/U leaves some room for improvement.

Goldenpony 08-13-2006, 11:00 PM I just installed Sony XS-V680HB speakers both in the doors and in the back. These are 2 way, 6x8 speakers with tweeters in the center. These are great speakers! I have the Shaker 500, which sounded good before-but I can't believe how much better it is with these Sonys. They're direct bolt-ins, just had to break off one tab on each front speaker. I got harness adapters from Crutchfield and soldered them to the speakers so I wouldn't have to cut any wires. I was a little nervous about the install, but it turned out to be a breeze. Some of the best money I've spent.
ucdgreek 08-13-2006, 11:25 PM can you tell me where u got those sony speakers and how much they cost...thanks in advance
drbobvs 08-13-2006, 11:56 PM Yes, those are the Infinity's i used, one word of caution, You'd better like treble!
Goldenpony 08-14-2006, 12:13 AM I got the Sonys from Electronics Express. They were $62 and change plus $14.40 shipping per pair. Best price I found. The 2 pair were like $154 something delivered. Fast service too.
nbk13nw 08-14-2006, 02:27 AM Yup and 6x8 / 5x7 speaker will fit. I have Infinity in the rear and Rockford Fosgate in the front. Also, replaced the door subs with Rockford Fosgate 8's as well as some RF 10's in the rear.
hogpowr 08-14-2006, 03:10 AM I would stay away from the pioneer tsa-6880, the tweeters are very harsh......I tried them and was dissapointed.

which rockford did you use? and where did you get them?
skin5050 08-14-2006, 01:34 PM I went w/ Polk Audios all the way around. They are very similiar to the Infinity's, but have a little more bass. They sound absolutely great. But remember, your not going to get great sound out of a pair of good speakers unless you get rid of the shaker and get a good after market head unit.

the stock speakers are as bad as the head unit.
CDW63 08-14-2006, 09:55 PM I agree about replacing the speakers, I have the Alpine CDA-9857 headunit in place of the shaker500, mostly for the Ipod interface (works great). The HU really improved the sound dramatically, but I am going to replace the f/r speakers in the next couple of weeks to get the most from the new deck.
Gone2 08-14-2006, 10:07 PM I replaced all four with the previous year models of theses. Do it, Do it, Do it. I chose these because of the low frequency response. I could see how the 6880's could be TOO high with 3 tweeters, these 3ways are just crisp enough.
You can get them cheaper than crutchfield if you dont mind not getting the adapters and wiring them yourself.

Well, now you guys have me considering this option. Just to clarify, you started with the stock Shaker 500 system? Did you leave the two front door subwoofers intact, or did you replace those as well? My inclination is to replace the four 6x8's like you did and leave the subs as-is. Are you pleased with the performance of that setup?
Are you still using the original Shaker 500 head unit? Like CDW63, I just installed an Alpine CDA-9857.
Gone2 08-24-2006, 12:58 AM Leave the door subs. Just replace the other four.
I just sit in the car to listen to music.
mattblasi 08-24-2006, 01:13 AM i have Kicker 6 1/2" ss series components, had to use an adapter plate and they barely fit but they're there
Cowtown 08-24-2006, 04:40 PM Changing the stock 4 speakers made a huge difference. I put in JBL GTO 6x8 2 ways I got on clearance from Best Buy, great bang for the buck. The stock head unit isn't fantastic but with the speaker change it's quite competent now. I may upgrade later to one that allows for easier connectivity with my Ipod and XM but I'm in no rush.
With my installation I just had to remove a few tabs from the speakers with some pliers, took all of 2 minutes.

Have you settled on speakers yet? Anyone else have this Alpine HU?
jerseyblood 08-24-2006, 08:04 PM I replaced them all with Diamond audio. Replaced the Shaker 500 and cant tell you the difference it makes.
patricknm 08-25-2006, 07:18 PM ... Anyone else have this Alpine HU?
OK, I have the Alpine CDA-9857 head unit and just replaced the four main speakers this morning with Pioneer TS-A6871R 6" x 8" 3-Way Speakers (see post by Gone2 above). I left the two factory subs in the front doors as they were. Please note that I am not very knowledgeable about sound systems and sound quality in general, but I am a bit of a perfectionist and like my music to sound good.
I will write more later after I have spent more time with it, and after I have played with the audio adjustments. I have only listened to it for a short while today. But my first impression is that I am very happy with this system when driving with the top up on my convertible. I still find that when I put the top down, and as a consequence really turn the volume up, that I am dealing with some distortion or over-driving or who-knows-what. But like I said, I need to play with it more.
Of course, another consideration for me is that I can't keep spending money on sound system upgrades... at this point I have to say "this is good enough". And the truth is, I am pretty happy with this setup given the money I invested in it.
Grey_Ghost 11-11-2006, 12:21 PM Just got done replacing the 2 doors/rear deck speakers with Alpine SPS-57C2 (5x7 two-way) this morning and all I can say is WOW! The sound difference was amazing. I listened to Sony, Pioneer, Rockford Fosgate, etc. The Alpines sounded the best in the store, I choose the cheapest deck/middle deck/most expensive deck with no amps on and bass/treble set to default on both so just the speakers I was sampling were on and I could hear what they all sounded like . Many moons ago I was an installer/manager for Circuit City and actually moved on from there to work on Ford audio and factory security at a dealership (out of that industry now too) and developed a pretty good ear for what sounds best. Of course with anything this is just IMHO, but they do rock!!!!
luckydawg003 11-11-2006, 04:54 PM Will 6x9's fit in the rear? and will 6 1/2's fit in the doors? thanks
Johnnie D 11-13-2006, 11:25 AM 6x9's wont fit the rear...6x8 or 5x7's are the stock speaker hole size...I put in polk audios in the doors havent got to the rear yet...they run about $100 a pair...
mike3000 11-14-2006, 03:32 PM For those of you that replaced the rear speakers....
I tried doing it this past weekend with no luck because I could not get back there to remove the bolts due to the angle of the rear windshield.
How did you guys do it. I did try to use an angled tool with a flexible neck with no luck.
Thanks
Gone2 11-14-2006, 04:43 PM I used one of those thumb wheels that holds the screwdriver bit. My was plastic w/o the ratcheting. I came in one of those small cheap socket/driver bit kits.

techmanBDsStang 11-16-2006, 02:38 PM I used the Infinity Kappa 682.7cf . As getting the rears out. I used a snub type ratcheted screwdriver. I forget the size torque bit, but it is a torque bit needed. I couldn't see what I was doing, it was by feel though. Not easy, but doable.
And they fit fine. There was a small tab for a screw I had to bend outward, but easily done.

fl_799 11-16-2006, 02:52 PM I used e-bay for all 4 of my speakers. Picked up 5X7 Audiobahn plates (4" mid, tweeter)with crossover up front and regular Pyle 5X7's for the rear deck all for under $100. The prices on speakers on e-bay are more then half off in most cases. I thought the stock shaker 500 mids were a bit murkey and the highs were not defined. Any aftermarket speaker should easily fix this.
lonny2 11-16-2006, 04:06 PM i have the alpine wa-200 double din which is very good but to many features to actually use, so i am currently selling it,but as far as front speakers go i have jlaudio zr series components front and rear and it sound awsome. the door subs a actually really not worth doin.
probinator 12-19-2006, 09:57 PM back from the dead. But is there a harness you can buy to hook up a after market stereo....
shockme76 12-20-2006, 01:50 AM Is anyone using component speakers for the front? If so, where did you mount the tweet? Post a pic if you have it.
Stewart 12-20-2006, 03:19 AM I am, I'll take a pic in the morning. Replacing my sound system was my summer project and my first time tackling anything like it and I'm extremely happy with how it came out. I gave in and paid to have my amps mounted on my rear seats but other than that managed to do it myself.
For the front I put in a set of Polk SR 6500's and they sound amazing. I'm really into music and am pretty anal about sound quality and these don't dissapoint. As of now I've got the 4 channel alpine mid level amp (it's 125 wpc bridged) running them and while I'm sure a better amp would help they sound excellent.
For the install I got 1/4 inch mdf made two cut outs after tracing the stock speakers that are above the subs (I had the shaker 500) and made cut out inside for tweets using a dremel saw (pretty sure that's the name, it's the saw that uses a drill bit so I could start from inside and not have to cut into the board). Since the main speakers were only 6.5 inch I made a ring out of mdf to mount the speakers on and just got some slightly larger screws to screw into the factory screw locations. Popped off the stock grill from the subs and put those along with the plastic ring over and looks 100% stock. I put plenty of foam around the ring to reduce any vibration, dynamatted basically the whole door, plastic as well and it did a pretty good job. I've gotta put some weather stripping along some plastic parts to stop some rattles but I can't get over how good it sounds and how well the install looks.
Just fyi I repalced the rear deck speakers with Clif designs, and have a Saes Lotus 12 inch sub powered by a jl audio 500/1 with an Alpine cda 9857 head unit. It's loud and clear.
Stewart 12-20-2006, 03:21 AM Also just to note, I found that head unit to be on the bright side. The polks were a bit bright to begin with so I had to take the tweeters down a notch via the crossovers. I talked to some audio guys at a shop here who have the same deck and they too said it was bright, not overly so but just somethign to keep in mind if you're shopping around. Personally I find the high crips and clear, no bleeding ears but I could see how some people might not like it.

The screws aren't on too tightly, I was able to take a torx bit and unscrew them by hand.
HypromanGT 12-20-2006, 04:51 AM So I just went to Crutchfield's site and did the whole "what fits in my car" thing...turns out they don't think that the Infinity Reference 6812cf speakers will fit in my 06...? Are they just flat out wrong or what?

+1. I also replaced all four with Infinity Kappa 682.7cf's and have no complaints what so ever. Replaced the door subs with MTX 4508-4s, replaced the trunk subs with a Scosche box and an Infinity sub, replaced the skipper1000 head unit with a Kenwood DDX7015, and driving it with two Kicker 650.4 amps.

That is because they are 6x8 speakers and since the factory size is 5x7 their database doesn't recognize a 6x8 as fitting. But they will.

Go in to the trunk and break the plastic nut on the speaker bolt/cover with a pair of plyers or something. Then replace the plastic nut with a metal one. You are going to want to tighten down the speakers better than they were from the factory anyway. Especially if you add power to it.
06VistaBlueGT 12-20-2006, 12:54 PM Huh, didn't realize my car had a stereo...
I've just been listening to the engine all along! :D
