Default Four-Tens or Three Seventy-Threes?

Which gears and why? i hear alot of crap about working the engine really hard at high speeds and eventhough i want a nice jump off the line would i be in alot of trouble if i put 4.10 gears in there and drove at 80mph. i also heard that its the preferred gear for an autmatic tranny as opposed to the 3.73 why?

Im really lost on this guys. anyone have 4.10s? why didnt you get them if you didnt and why did you get them if you did. once again im begging for the mercy of you fanatics to help me with ANOTHER big decision. Whats the pros and cons for each?

from what i have herd 4.10 are not tolerable in an auto
people say drive around with your od off for a week and if you can take it then get 4.10
the 3.73s are better for an auto
you will get a great jump with them

I just got my 3:73's, its the first time I really noticed an improvement. runs 2000 at 60 mph, and a good hit in the back when I gun it. I drive from grand rapids michigan to detroit every other week, so the 4:10's were out of the question for me. I'm still hoping to get 22-25 mpg on the highway.

my opinion is anything less then a .80 final drive ratio deserves 4.10s, the autos are .75, it will also make up if you plan on draging alot for the softer launch from an auto to a manual, for a 5 speed though 4.10s are it hands down

I'd go for 3.73's. You're going from 3.31 to 3.73, that should be a big improvement.

+1 typical rule of thumb.. Auto's 4.10 Manuals 3.73..if you can find them you can go with 3.93

IMO without replacing the DS I would not put 4.10 on it......

no, 5 speeds go with 4.10s to, they have a 5th gear ratio of .72 so its not that bad, there are no 3.93s, its motive 3.90s and are only available in the 8.8" rear
