View Full Version : 28 MPG? How?
XtacY 08-06-2006, 09:48 PM Are any of you guys getting 28 MPG with your sixxers? The past four fillups I've averaged a whopping 19 MPG. Is it possible sometihng is interferring iwth my good gas mileage or is this about right? I don't think my driving habits are bad.. I shift aruond 4000 RPM and I always cruise in the lowest gear possible (for example at 55 MPH I shift directly from 3rd to 5th). What's wrong with my stang?
dmhines 08-06-2006, 10:11 PM Unless I'm going up a hill ... I shift around 2000 RPM or so .... During normal day to day driving I see no reason to ever touch 4 Grand on the tach .. My first tank averaged about 22.5 MPG .... The manual says the readings are not accurate until 2000 - 3000 miles ....

I shift aruond 4000 RPM
I do the same thing (ever since I got my gt takeoff). I also have a problem with my right foot, it's made of lead, anyways mine is decend on gas even with my driving habits. Alot has to do with the miles you have on your car also, it gets better over time.
beaustang 08-06-2006, 10:51 PM +1 on the shifting habits; 4000 is for racing, shift at 2000 and use cruise control when you can. I have the IUP and check mileage at crusing speeds (70 mph) on cruise control and see 30+ mpg. When I drive mellow I can get 22+ combined city/freeway. Bottom line is how you drive, if you drive mostly city with a lot of start and stop 19 mpg is probably about right with the way you shift.
brance 08-06-2006, 11:05 PM i managed 27.5 avg on a 300 mile trip, interstate entire way, 70-75mph, around town I usually avg. around 21
QWKYNUF 08-06-2006, 11:21 PM I drive my Mustang in my work, so I keep meticulous records for tax purposes. I have put 18,500 miles on my 06 since I bought it on 12/26/05, and have averaged 26.66 mpg overall. I don't have the Info center - and I don't really trust it to be accurate anyway - so I calculate my fuel mileage the old fashioned way: Miles driven / gallons used.
My worst tank so far has been 23.0, and my best was 29.6 (twice).
I also shift at around 2000 - 2500 rpm, I guess I probably 'get into it' a few times a week - running it up to 60 or 70 at WOT, shifting at 4500 or so.
Most of my driving is in the Portland, OR metro area, so it's 15 minutes of stoplight to stoplight, then 15 minutes on the freeway, then 15 more minutes of city driving - several times a day (I do on-site tech support). some rush hour stop & go, and very occasionally I get the opportunity to drive a full tank on the freeway.
Does that help any?

ricklmesa@cox.net 08-06-2006, 11:38 PM You divide how many miles one tank gets by how many gallons your car holds right??
I think im only getting like 16.5 with the procharger set up but im going to keep watching it. I shift at 2500 - 3000 at the most. I got about 240 miles out of a whole tank. I used to get like 265 - 274 miles out of a whole tank of gas but not anymore lol. I don't think I ever averaged anything over 18.9 with my car and that was when it was NA. [:'(] Makes me think something is wrong??? I never even got into the 20's let alone 28 miles
moonstang 08-07-2006, 12:43 AM Not quite. That is only accurate assuming you run the tank dry. You divide the number of miles you drove since your last fillup by the number of gallons it takes to fill it back up. If you are really concerned about mileage, I found it interesting to set the IUP guage to Fuel Efficiency meter and try to keep it at peak efficiency. Basically, the rated 29 mpg highway mileage (for a manual) is what you get if you never put your foot down all the way!
Moonbaby1973 08-07-2006, 01:03 AM Driving on short trips, i average around 19 or 20 miles per gallon. I have taken my Mustang on one business trip, around 500 miles on the interstate. Doing around 70 most of the trip, i did get 28.5 miles per gallon. Thats the most i have been able to squeeze out of a gallon to date.

Trill Gear Head 08-07-2006, 01:20 AM ummm lol. I consider that good gas mileage for shifting at 4k. Its simple. Shift before 2500rpm unless your passing or going up a hill. Whoever tautght you how to drive a stick didn't explain it well enough. The higher the rpm's the harder the engine is working and the more the engine is working the more fuel your engine will use.
LX200 08-07-2006, 01:36 AM To put it in perspective, I have an auto, and if I am driving "normally", my auto is shifting before 2500 RPM all the time. If I am pounding it, it hangs in there till 4000-4500. If I am really ripping it, it hangs in till 5500. Bottom line. 4000 RPM means you are getting up to speed WAY too quickly if you are concerned about gas mileage.
chuckcsf 08-07-2006, 02:56 AM 19 MPG? Wow that is nice, I've never seen my stang go over 15MPG!
Playboy06 08-07-2006, 03:03 AM I'm at 1649 Miles running regular octane, I get 13MPG - Quit crying.
chuckcsf 08-07-2006, 03:06 AM Well, I thought I was the only one. Last time I asked what MPG was everyone getting, where were you? I actually went back to the dealer and screamed their heads off.

What the?! 13mpg?! I never got that low in the GT... I hope you're joking around...
HurricaneStang 08-07-2006, 07:54 AM I get like 22.5 MPG on the average between city and highway. I don't have the lead foot unless i come up on a ricer cuz there happens to be quite a bit of those round these parts so once in a while gotta show em up :D
boss 244 08-07-2006, 10:33 AM I get 22 city and 28 highway @ 75mph, bu that will change............
Sevalley 08-07-2006, 02:38 PM 28 mpg lol, ya right, good luck!

Whoa... 2000 RPM? Who here honestly shifts at 2000 RPM? Come on guys, these are mustangs and we're not the elderly driving them :) I'd like to accelerate a little faster than a diesel concrete truck. I think I can slow it down to 3000. That's what most autos shift at in the japanese cars.
Furinox 08-07-2006, 03:40 PM and japanese cars have no torque, thus taking you longer to get up to speed.
boss 244 08-07-2006, 03:52 PM Just to make sure, I checked my mileage book (gotta keep it for work) I drove -
242.2 miles on 8.534 gallons=28.3mpg @70 mph
231.4 miles on 8.518 gallons=27.1mpg @70mph
most other trips 25 mpg. These trips are from grand rapids mi to southfield mi, including trips to lunch.

I wish I was - Mine still says "12.7MPG" And I have a K&NAF+Exhaust
Justice 08-07-2006, 04:32 PM And you hammer it every single time? Or is it normal driving? Because that is just so not the right territory to be in with a v6 when you are driving normally. Or a v8 for that matter…
chuckcsf 08-07-2006, 04:51 PM I tried driving as slow as my grandmother and the highest I got was 14.8. Most of the time when I drive its around 10mph stop 5mph stop 10 mph stop.... until I get to the freeway. I live 7 miles from work and takes me almost half an hour to and from work. Maybe that's another reason why I'm getting such a low MPG. Manufacturers should add another MPG rating on cars. We should have Highway, City, and So Cal Cities.
rfruscel 08-07-2006, 05:03 PM I've been getting around 23-24 with mixed driving and I'm not babying it either. I did get about 28 on 1 tank that was mostly highway driving and early shifting.
chrisc 08-07-2006, 05:16 PM i get 14.4
traffic sucks the big one

I usually avg the 21 mpg, mostly highways...but durring rush hour, so very stop and go!
I just took her out for a first road trip... 300 miles round trip 70-75mph and got 27 mpg :D
(automatic)
boss 244 08-07-2006, 05:28 PM I feel for the so-cal guys, 7 miles to work and 1/2 hour drive-damn. I go 25 miles in 30 minutes. 60 mph for all but the last 4 miles.
