Default Cold Air Tuning?

Looking at purchasing a MAF and came across a few types on setups. What exactly does "cold air tuning" mean on these MAFs. I thought it referred to the housing being flanged so that it would bolt right up onto the chrome cold air intake kits. Then I saw these, this one is non-flanged, which is what I need, but says its tuned for a cold air intake. What does that mean? Could I use that unit on my setup even though I dont have a CAI. I dont see why not, but want to make sure before I invest this money.

(Maybe the picture is just representing all of their MAFs and it may come flanged even though the one in the pic isnt flanged, and yes I realize thats what it says under the picture)

Select that option if you have a CAI. I allows for more/smoother air flow to the MAF.

To put it simply, those MAMs are for old style ram air intakes where the filter sits under the hood and not in the fenderwell. The filter simply clams onto the end of the MAM and then the MAM clamps onto the rest of the piping.

How?

How is one MAF tuned for Cold Air, and another not?

The computer makes adjustments for temp, so I am not sure about this.

Thanks for any clarification you can add.

Yes, I am wondering the same thing too. Could I use a CAI one without a CAI? I dont see how the hell the ECU would know the difference.

I had asked Pro-M about this question also, I believe it just has to do with the bend before the meter, so something has to be adjusted. Otherwise if the filter is on the end of the mass meter, there is no bend there for it doesn't need to be cold air tuned. Its basically the manner in how the air blows thru your meter.

Okay that makes sense. So would I be okay if I bought the cold air tuned meter for my regular straight intake? I called Summit Racing and their tech support isn't available on weekends. I can't find this answer to my question for the life of me, and my car is still not running!!!!!

Ask these guys, they'll know for sure, as they are the ex-Pro-M guys (since that company did go out of business, they can set you up with some info I'm sure.) http://www.massairsystems.com/

That's about right. Also, a CAI is usually a larger diameter and is smooth inside, unlike stock tubing. Rough airflow = less accurate readings.
