Just curious if anybody changed out or upgraded their Shaker. It's a decent sound system and all, but I had better quality speakers and a box with a cooler display in my last car. I just don't like the way factory radio looks, I like lots of electronic lights and all those cool display features :) So who removed the shaker from their car or replaced parts of it?

you can put in a double din 6.7 or 7" dvd indash player if you want.

the door speakers are 8" subs or you can downsize to 6.5" mids, and then where the 5x7 area is you can fit a 4" with a 1" tweeter. and take out the back speakers and put subs in. which their are endless possibilities for subs and boxes on which way you want it to be.

How do these units work? I hear a lot of people talk about a "head". Is this just the player part and radio, without the amp? And how is it that you can buy an Alpine and get the wires to match up with the Mustang? Has the wiring been standardized? Same for the hole size the radio fits in. How do you get it to fit? Is this standardized?

Any good sites out there that detail all the latest car radio standards and technologies??

people callthem head units.. people around here often like to call them decks..

to get them to fit, you need a new deck plate or face plate how ever you want to call it

no wiring for audio did not get standardized.. but basic electrical skills will get your system pumping.. for best results get an installer to do it for you.. that way there is no fudge ups

heres mine

what a timely topic! I had the Shaker 1000 and just put in a Pioneer A/V unit: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069872_192089338,00.html

I keep all the Shaker speakers and subs/amps. They sound GREAT! Much better than I expected!!! So the weak point of the shaker seems to be the headunit (deck). I really can't believe how good the stock shaker speakers sound with the pioneer! Especially now that I have more subwoofer control than just on/off! LOL! The high pass really made a difference too... the sound is lot crisper.. not so muddy... I was figuring I would have to upgrade my speakers... but dang they sound good enough mre me!!! LOL!

Of course you know I'll have to get one of these to go with it: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069876_192089326,00.html

To replace the headunit on a Shaker 1000 (possibly 500???) you'll need one of these harnesses: http://www.audiooutfitter.com/store/104683/70-5521.html

BTW... did i mention how good the Pioneer sounds! LOL!

Hmmm... I must be one of the only people that enjoys their Shaker. I can deal with the skip(only happens once in a while), but I love the 6 CD changer.

Well... part of my reason to upgrade was some more interior bling! LOL! I always thought the Shaker sound just "ok"... I am really surprised how much better my car sounds now! LOL! I really don't use the CD that much... I'm an XM junkie! LOL!

Yeah I'm impressed too by the sound, I had two 10" woofers in the trunk but I took them out cause they weighed about 70lbs. Also it wasn't bolted down so it slid all over the place.

my plans for my stereo install are thus...

re audio xxx 8" mids in teh doors
mb quart 4" qsd210 speakers with 1" tweeters.
kicker zx650.2 ampflier for the speakers. which is 325x2 rms power.

removing the rear speakers as the installation of 2 re audio 10" xxx subwoofers would massive and rediculous. I'd be removing the back seat and making an amp rack for two kicker zx2500 watt amps and the speaker amp. (about 6-6500rms watts with all the 3 amps.) the subs would face towards the trunk so you see the beautfiul subs.

THen about 200sq feet of second skin damplifier.

100ft of 1/0ga wiring. a kinetic 2400 in the engine bay (2600cca) and 2 2400 kinetics in the trunk. have to run 2 runs of the 1/0 wire from pos and neg terminals front to back, so 4 runs total. the box is the hardest part of the whole system so i'd be part mdf and part fiberglass ensuring that the it was plenty strong for the mass that those xxx subs move.

then throwing in alpine indash dvd player with the add on audio computer. but with no nav cuz i dont drive that much to get lost

no matter which way you look at it, it would cost atleast 8000$.

Problem is the stock headunit... looks... well.... like stock! LOL! In the world of car shows no one looks at it and says "wow! That's a shaker 1000 and it's a $1200 option!" They go "ho-hum.. it's just got the stock radio..." Regardless if it's peer voting or a judged show having a nice aftermarket HU is going to get you points...

Right now I've got a good balance between perfmance and appearance... the new pioneer was definitely a performance upgrade... for my ears! LOL!
