Stock for Stock the WRX has a good chance. The AWD really gets the car off the line in a hurry. I think that it will basically come down to driving skill but don't count him out by any means.

ifyour 98 GT is stock, the WRX will holeshotyou and pull onyou indefinately. there's a kid around here with a silver one, stock, that keeps wanting to race me... seen him twice..once i was turning into my firends neighborhood...he rolled up next to me, downshifted and took off, then did that to me again the other night at a light, but it was raining so i didnt chase him. wich turned out to be good, cuz of puddles ahead. those things take off quick from a roll, i was suprised.

~I ran into a WRX on the road a while back, and he started getting all squirelly. I tried to catch up to him, but everytime I'd get close enough to see the driver, he'd pull faster yet so I couldn't see. What I think he was doing since we were already on a roll was trying to get up to speed where his turbo would have spooled up. We didn't end up racing, cuz a cop on the other side of the road saw us blow by @ around 60mph &amp; turned around, so we had to break it off.</P>

~IMO, stock for stock that WRX Impreza will definitely handle a 98GT. Let's see some logic here. WRX has a newer engine that does not have 5yrs on it; WRX has more hp (300) than your car (234 for that year I believe); WRX has AWD (good for launches); I believe the WRX is also lighter than your car; slight issue of a TURBO booster; anda guy who if you loose to will never let you live it down. Stock vs Stock...your car still is not turbo'd. However, I'd try him anyway down spin you tires, pray to God, and take out one of the IMO ugliest imports around. Good luck</P><edited><editID>GSXRIntensity</editID><editDate>37842.5801273148</editDate></edited>

Actually if it is an STi version then dont bother. But if it's the older one by all means he has a chance. The older WRX came with 270hp I believe and the drive train loss on the AWD is ridiculous. Also the stock turbocharger is really small and doesn't flow well up top. I have seen stock dyno's of the WRX and they make around 197 wheel horse power and the power starts to fall off around 4,500 rpm. Not very good when you have a car that redlines at 7,000rpm.

I say go for it, I think you have a good chance and if you loose get some 4.10's and have at him <img border="0" src=smileys/smiley2.gif border="0">

BSisme is correct. Both of thoes Hp numbers are at the flywheel. A 02 WRX will take a 98GT. Now, if you did a 70 roll it would be a diff. story due to the fact the WRX does not have much top end push.</P>

Cheers </P>

Race the WRX from a roll if you can. WRX's are red-light warriors...not much for top-end where the 4.6's kick ass.

well i was f*ckin around with him before, red light turnin onto a highway, i didnt wanna get on it around the whole turn cuz i didnt wanna slide out, but i knew if i did it would be over cuz the awd would help him handle, so i said f*ck it, had the inside advantage, made a decent wide turn cuz i had to to but we both kept goin at it till at least 100 and he didnt catch up, he was right at the same spot behind me the whole time(only behind cuz i had inside or else we would be side by side) we went at it again around 75, but stopped after 2 seconds cuz we had to turn off. i think if we raced from light we would be side by side the whole time, maybe he might get me a little at first but i think around 55-60 i would start to gain ground and start to walk by, if we have room that is where there is no cops.

First of all, the new STi has 250 hp not 300. Second, I actually own both a 2002 WRX and a 2002 GT. The two cars are close, however the race would depend on acouple of key factors... #1 what tranny is the WRX running, if its automatic then the stang has an advantage. #2 what kind of rubber is the stang running, if you have radials then while youre smoking the Subaru will be leaving you behind. #3 driving experience, enough said. Stock for stock with manual transmissions, the WRX is going to beat you. It has too much punch out of the gate and if they can keep the rpm's above 3000 (when the turbo winds up) you won't see their front end until its over. <IMG alt=Cry border=0 onclick="AddSmileyIcon'smileys/smiley19.gif'" src=smileys/smiley19.gif border="0"></P>

My WRX has an automatic tranny which definitely takes away from the power and I know my 02 GT can beat it, and with my mods I could probably take one with a 5 speed but it would be close. Those cars are fast!! Maybe Ford should look into a flat 8 engine? <IMG alt=Cool border=0 onclick="AddSmileyIcon'smileys/smiley16.gif'" src=smileys/smiley16.gif border="0"></P>

The 227 hp number for the WRX are at 6000 rpm and it does have quite a bit of high end push, the difference is great low end torque with the turbo.</P>
