Yeah,

Ford Taurus, and J car doesn't have enough rack movement.
I've got a modified J car rack in my car. It's a kit produced by Randall's Rack. Great guy, quality piece, decent price. Without finding the perfect rack and building the whole thing yourself, (IMO) this is about as good as it gets.

I do think there is a rack & pinion out there, I just haven't made time to go find it. But as popular as this swap is becoming I may make the time. Because someone is going to make some good money with the right rack packaged correctly.

Good luck,

I haven't heard of anyone going to a junkyard and finding a rack that just bolts up to a 60's mustang.

as far as i know you need a custom cradle to bolt it to .

I have a total control products on mine. it's integral to it's mounting bar.

someday, i'll have it on the road and i can give some feedback on how it does

Go get a pinto or a late 70s mustang rack and pinion from a mustang II, i herad theyre very good and easily modify-able. or you can look up Chris Altons Chassis Works, they have alot of suspension set ups and i actually use thier rearend 4 link system, theyre very nice people and they helped me through alot. heres the site http://www.cachassisworks.com/Home.html

I have a Tarus rack and Pinion on my '67 and I love it. It has a good feel. It's power but not "floaty" like a Cadillac. They guy who did the work made a fabricated bracket to make it work. Not sure what year the part is however.

see a photo here (bottom of the page)

It's a 1988 Tarus. You can use and Explorer rack and pinion, too.

A taurus is a junkyard queen. Go look! when i went, they had like 12 of them. I will start yanking rack and pinions for a small price.
My junkyard sells rack and pinions for 36.95

For those not wanting power steering, a PS gear box, manual center link and roller idler arm makes quite an improvement over the stock manual setup.
I would put it up against any manual rack & pinion. Now a power rack & pinon properly designed is a different story, but also carries a hefty price tag that my setup does not :)

I'm using a manual center link on what used to be an original power system works pretty good.

If I were to do a rack and pinion conversion I'd probably keep it manual steering, but what I really want is a front end without the shock towers. Can this be done with all Mustang II stuff?

Sorry for the thread hijack...

Justin

Yeah, it has been done many times, but the Mustang II front ends are lame. I built a kit car one time, and used the rack and pinion from a 78 Mustang and it worked just fine for that application. Now, as far as powersteering, I have powersteering. It's called powersteering by Armstrong. I don't think we need powersteering on our 65-66's, but you guys with the big boats do I suppose.
