So today I went for a ride with a guy who just got his SCT X-Cal 2 tuner and tuned it with the 93 octane? (Don't know much about tunes) Anyway, I was AMAZED! I cannot believe the difference. My question is that I have the MMR CAI, which I understand is not tunable (but it does look good). He has the K&N which he says is technically not tunable. Am I going to see the amount of performance increase as his car has?
From what I have read there are three kinds of CAI's
a) Not tunable .... don't change air flow at all.... worthless.
b) Not tunable .... Leans your car AF mixture and gives the impression of better fuel economy (by running lean enough to avoid a CEL warning, but still lean).
c) Tunable .....Substantial air flow increase and requieres a tune to avoid CEL (best choice) CEL warning typically occurrs when the "Math" used by the MAF and Table can not come up with a suitable AF mixture and thinks the world is gone mad....

If I am wrong please correct me guys......
Thats pretty spot on

I know my MMR did not require a tune, now when I bought it they advertised ( and still do) that the entire package that I purchased would increase my horsepower by 35, I certainly don't think it did that, but I did notice a little gain. I am getting duals if they ever get here, and I feel like I should notice a little more gain from the MMR because of th GT take offs being less restrictive. ??Does that sound right?

The claim sounds right, whether those claims are substantiated by a dyno run or not, I don't know. You'll be hard-pressed to find a bolt-on CAI that will give you 35+ hp.

And don't forget, too, that depending on who wrote the tune program you use, you may or may not have as aggressive a tune as your buddy, even though you may be running the same octane.
He Got his from Brenspeed, and said those guys were super cool. I could not believe when he stomped on the freakin gas from a complete stop, he laid rumber a long way, and actually said he could have gone a little more. My car will not do that now! He has an auto like mine, except mine is 06. I was very impressed and will be purchasing the X-Cal in the very near future. Thanks for everyone's posts.

It gets a little fuzzy when talking about RWHP and flywheel HP. If the CAI and tune yield 25 RWHP, that would be the same as 30-32 HP at the flywheel. So, if you want to know how much higher a HP you should quote when comparing to flywheel HP for other cars, it would seem adding 30 HP for tune, CAI and muffler is about right. That puts our V6's at a very respectable 240 HP and 250+ torque, flywheel.
