I hesitate to put dual exhaust in my V6. Will the reduced back pressure be enough to keep the engine happy? I don't care about the warranty because the warranty only lasts a few years, but I'd like to get many, many years out of this engine.
I've heard many opinions, but is there anything factual out there? Maybe a poll will shed some light on this.

Who told you it would hurt the engine?

I told a few friends about my plans, and they both questioned me about whether there'd be enough back pressure. They aren't experts or anything, but knowledgeable enough to make me have doubts. I plan to go with the majority poll here, and would appreciate any technical comments anyone wishes to make.

it wont harm the engine, but too much lack of back pressure will reduce rwhp. many people here have good setups that have made some good gains, but the best are still from the singles. i sya go with duals because they look really good

mmmm...misnomers abound.
Just putting dual exhaust on your car will hurt nothing. However, you should consider the diameter you use and go no larger than 2 1/4inch. Any larger and you will hurt the cars performance. In stock form you will lose a few HP on the low end but will more than make up for it at higher RPM.
While there is such a thing as not-enough back pressure, it does not physically damage your motor. Only the performance.

Okay, my plan is to take it in and get a shop to do everything (I already have the GT takeoffs). Are you talking about all of the piping being 2 1/4, or just what is upstream from the cats (which I won't be touching)?
Also, I have one left hanger from the right side. Do I just need to go and buy one single hanger for $40 and I'm all set?

2 1/4 Inner diameter. You will lose some bottom end oomph with 2 1/2 but you'll make up for it on the top end. You should be able to use the existing hangers and just buy the additional one and be fine. I'm not certain though since I haven't seen the underside of the 05+ models though.

I lost nothing with dual's. Some say you'll loose the bottm end but when I got duals with x pipe it was harder to take off like it was more open/powerful in the bottom end. Couldn't stop the wheel from breaking loose LOL Don't worry too much about it. Its a 4.0L V6 not a 2.8LV6 or a 2.0 or 2.4 V4's. Don't get it twisted though, dual exhaust is not needed on our engines to exceed performance. Just look at screamin & fazm. They have some of the best times for our cars on these forums and they still have single exhaust. Basically its not a must have like how it is on a V8, But it will not hurt the performance of the car and it will sound better in my opinion.

Yep... I'm still running a single... The Mistress will always be a single exhaust... LOL! To much fun when the ricers come up behind me and think i'm a dressed up V6 and and an easy target... LOL

Nice!! I love it. I've been enjoing the procharger even thought it has a small leak. gunna get it in a month or so but I want to enjoy it for a little bit before I send it back and haft to drive NA for a month ya know.
Hey wanted to ask you a question. Are you going to run headers eventually? Do you think its worth it being FI'd? I see you and rygen have not done them yet and if there were any benifit to them FI you guys would be the first to have done them. Is it not worth it even FI ya think?

I really think the next big bottle neck is the cats... not the stock manifolds... when it's time to put the rebuilt motor in we'll probabl look at headers... but until then no plans for headers...

Duals on a stock 4.0L are really not beneficial... couple of HP.. not worth the extra expense... Simply replace the stock muffler with a good aftermarket muffler... (LIke the MRT Aeroturbine! LOL!).

Mustangs just don't look right with single exhausts. ITS A MUSCLE CAR MAN!! They should all come with duals stock but Ford saves money just with a single setup. Look at all the muscle cars in the older movies, the all have duals, looks and slightly better performance is worth the money. And no it won't hurt the engine one bit if anything it breathes better.

A very wise person explained it this way to me...
People see dual exhaust and they EXPECT a big V8 sound. You will NEVER get a V8 sound out of our cars... it is physically impossible! So instead of disappointing them why not make a mean sounding single and surprise them?
The V6 has always been a single AFAIK... I plan to keep with that tradition! LOL!

I'm doing it mostly for looks, and hopefully a sound improvement. If I get any extra ponies, that's a bonus. I'm sure a Mustang buff will be able spot my V6 a mile away say "Hey, that 'aint no GT, it's much too quiet, and check out the pony grille". Everybody else will just think it's a sweet-looking ride.
BTW I'm having second thoughts about louvers and stripes. Gonna keep it simple.

I'm in complete agreement with you scrming - I figure if we start running duals then not only are people disappointed by the lack of V8 noise but then people expect us to have the pulling power of the V8's too. It was just the other day when a Vette was all over me looking for a challenge and I have a single! So I figure the duals would be even more hassle - I can't beat a V8 so why try to imitate the look of one? At least with the single we can surprise people with a little tinkering here and there!

Mine is not to get the v8 look I like the way it looks w/duals. Racing a vette would have only been a hassle if you were looking for a race to get into duals would not have increased you chances of you pressing on the pedal to help incourage the vette to race

One of the things I love about GT's are the dual exhaust. I would never go so far as to put GT emblems on my V6 (:eek:anyone who does that deserves a good antenna lashing). But, I don't think GT dual exhaust is a bad thing at all.

i gotta vote for the duals. i just got t a pair of gt mufflers off ebay for $50 bucks. Single Passenger goin on next week, possibly custom H middle next month. But i like the even look of a dual, whether its a 8 or a 6. Sound is also a plus. i look at the backend and it looks off to me with a single exhaust. i just feel a dual would be a better look. As long as you keep the stock 6er emblems i think its ok. if you but gt emblems just cause you you have dual.....+1 on the antenna lashing

And if other V6's drive off a bridge would you drive off too? LOL!
There is no real performance advantage to putting duals on our 4.0L's when they are NA. Traditionally V6 Mustangs have been single exhausts. Early V8 Mustangs actually came with either dual or SINGLE exhausts. If you like the looks of duals.. that's fine... but that is really the only reason to put them on... so to answer the OP question, no it won't hurt.. but then again it really won't help either...
While duals don't mean GT, a single screams V6.... LOL!

Yea, pretty much what I was trying to say LOL
Some of you guys crack me up...larger diameter pipe (too large) will slow the velocity down of the exhaust system and make the system inefficient at scavanging. Meaning it won't keep the exhaust leaving the combustion chamber at the same speed (velocity) thus not allowing as much of the exhaust to be well...exhausted out of the combustion chamber to allow more air and fuel in the next cycle.
This is offset at Higher RPM and when the car is in motion.
That's also why LONGtube headers work better than shorties. The longtube headers retain heat better and thus increase the velocity of the exhaust gasses better than shorties.
Thomas Ford

I did'nt get larger pipe just the standard size when I got my duals. No problems at all.

you are a 100% correct, but you must realize, we can run off the headers and still make some ponies.. we have 2L displacemtn making up 3 cylnders. exiting one 2 1/2 inch diameter hole.. its still bottle necking..
of course if you were cammed, lift and duration alone running off the headers would then promote better power off the headers..
NA the scanvenging effect is wanted for economy and efficientcy , but when looking for performance scavenging gets in the way..ESPECIALLY when your force induced
