Default 66 Convertible Top Replacement

I am about to start replacing the top on a 1966 I am restoring. I have read an article in Mustang Monthly but wanted to hear from someone who has done it first hand. I have a brand new top with the plastic curtain, well liner and a top pad. The top is so worn out on the old one, I have no idea where the top pad goes. I have new header alignment pins, top clamp hooks and top latches. The top was manual and I won't be converting it to electric until further down the road. Any help or advice would be great.

Default RE: 66 Convertible Top Replacement

i replaced the top on my 67 this winter. took it all apart, painted the metal and installed the silver sound-deadening material.

my top looks ok but i did not get it exactly right. i wish i could do it again - but what's done is done.

i found a book in mustang's unlimited that had a detailed description on how to do it.

get a very good stapler - pneumatic is best. my hand stapler and the electric stapler where not stout enough to shoot the staples in all the way. you will probably need the tacking strips - mine were shot. i tried the tacks and hammer and it just wouldn't work for me.

you just have to be very patient and measure and remeasure before you make anything permanent.

the new top and curtain should have marks on them where they tack.

i talked to a local guy that gave me lots of advice...find one.

it is a long and tedious job for the uninitiated.
