HOW TO: Rear Sway Bar Install *Pics*

05BlackPony -> HOW TO: Rear Sway Bar Install *Pics* (7/18/2006 10:46:14 PM)

Dissapointed that Ford didn't give us sixers a rear-sway (except Pony Package),
I jumped on the group buy from Hellwig. Called Nancy (knows exactly what we need, ask for the MF group buy)
Kit includes everything and what I like about this vs. the GT takeoff that is is SOLID (26 lbs) and is adjustable. (Normal/Agressive)

Install!

First step.. well nothing to take off! lol
Prep for the sway can be a little timely. First is to squeeze the poly bushings in the brackets/hangers. (Lube is supplied lol [:D])
Next slide in the metal cylinders in the poly bushings.

*Remeber that the bushings/cylinders are bracket specific.

Bolt in the hangers in the chassis where the sway is supposed to be.
Bolt in the shock brackets.. (PITA) the lower bolt is easy, upper bolt is horrible. They supply lock nuts for the entire install, on the upper shock
bolt I went and got a regular bolt so I could at lease hand tighten it. Verrrry difficult if you use the locknuts given.

Mount the sway brackets to the hangers and bolt. Choose your driving style preferance for sway, (Outer hole normal, inner aggresive), bolt and tighten all!

Done!
In all, its a pretty straight forward install. Was time consuming again for me because of the 99 degree heat against the trunk.
Very noticeable improvment on my short test drive to get gas [8D] Here in NC there are alot of twisty roads.... to enjoy lol

Any questions, just ask!

LX200 -> RE: Rear Sway Bar Installed *Pics* (7/18/2006 11:39:52 PM)

Does the rear fit a vert? How much difference did you really feel? I sort of think my car already corners pretty well, but I am not pushing it to the absolute limit...

I really would have to beleive that it does fit the vert, since the kit also fits GTs as well. If you are really interested
in the sway, a quick call to Hellwig and ask for Nancy, I'm certain she can give you a definate answer. 1-800-367-5480

*It came with a few extra washers.. I don't know it there needed to fill a gap somewhere in the vert frame? [:-]

She corners very well. Turns with just a little wrist movement now, and seems to hug the road nice.
Very satisfied. [:)]

beaustang -> RE: Rear Sway Bar Installed *Pics* (7/19/2006 1:39:13 AM)

I put the same one on my vert and believe me it makes a big difference going from no sway bar to a Hellwig, I also put the GT take off on the front.

LesteR723 -> RE: Rear Sway Bar Installed *Pics* (7/19/2006 2:18:43 PM)

sounds like just what i'm interested in [:)] i coudlnt have the GT to be amazingly fast in a straight line and i'm not allowed to do engine mods (MOTHER!!!!) so i'm pushing the suspension to the limit. If your lookin to do the same i heard relocating the battery to the trunk, above the axel is a good place to start!

SPARTAN VI -> RE: Rear Sway Bar Installed *Pics* (7/19/2006 3:33:20 PM)

Woohoo. Just landed myself a pair of GT takeoff sway bars for $130. Can't wait to get them on!

Hell, I got in an accident and walk away with new shoes and sway bars. w00t. [:D]

SOLDSHORT -> RE: Rear Sway Bar Installed *Pics* (7/19/2006 3:43:54 PM)

2 Questions, did you have to jack it up? and which setting did you use on the bar?

I didn't jack it up because they don't recommend it. It is suggested that the load of the car be in place when bolting on.
I was able so slide under their pretty well. The right side is difficult due to the muffler. Some nice wide pieces of wood should be enough
to raise the rear to a desirable hight and still have the load of the car on the suspension.

I went with the normal setting. I figured that since the car never came with a rear sway, the "normal" setting would be a difference.
The improvement was noticeable right away. I would imagine that if the front/rear sways were set to most aggressive on each, it would handle like
a go kart lol.

tsaints1115 -> RE: Rear Sway Bar Installed *Pics* (7/30/2006 5:22:47 PM)

Wouldn`t you be able to jack the car up,place jack stands under the axle, then lower the car onto the stands which would load the suspension only higher off the ground?

nonstopred -> RE: Rear Sway Bar Installed *Pics* (9/3/2006 8:08:13 PM)

Umm where do you get a gt rear take off or the hellwig, and also how much do they go for. Im getting a front from saleen.

Hiboost -> RE: Rear Sway Bar Installed *Pics* (9/14/2006 10:19:47 PM)

I have the front and rear Hellwig. I drive with the throttle and hate Understeer. I have the front maxed at 3 and the rear maxed at 2, and the car is pretty flat. I am thinking of adding a hole in the factory bar similar to the adjustable Hellwig and see if that will make enought difference. Its hard to get FULLY in the throttle with full rear and min front, that is with the little stock tires.

SPARTAN VI -> RE: Rear Sway Bar Installed *Pics* (9/15/2006 1:19:15 AM)

I jacked up one side, slide a brick underneath and let it rest on the brick a little bit. Made it a LOT easier to move around.

I might have been able to do it without the jack.. for those who have met me, I'm rather thin. But it's very difficult to maneuver a 30-35lbs bar with so little space.

But after installation.. DAMN.. what a difference. I thought the new tires and front sway bar was nice, the rear really completes the package. I keep joking "IT HANDLES LIKE A BMW!!!"

Stckman -> RE: Rear Sway Bar Installed *Pics* (11/2/2006 7:25:03 PM)

Are helwigs really the best? im about a week away from getting my swaybar set and im considering the eibach anti roll kit. i understand any sway beats no way but to the hellwigs beat all? anybody else make adjustable sways?

I too was going to purchase the Eibach's, but the group buy for MF members was a good enough price for me.
Eibach's are solid bars like Hellwig, but just not adjustable.

dalbert -> RE: Rear Sway Bar Installed *Pics* (7/15/2007 12:30:13 PM)

I'm going to call Nancy and order both the front and rear Helwig swaybars ASAP...But before I call her, do the kits she sell come with absolutely EVERYTHING needed for a professional to install? I'm most likely going to get it installed by the dealer. I just want them to have everything they need.

Also, anyone who has them installed, did your dealer say anything about it voiding the warranty? Or voiding the warranty if a third party Autoshop installed it? I know it costs more to have the dealer install but I dont want to screw around with the warranty.

ODDYSEY -> RE: Rear Sway Bar Installed *Pics* (2/29/2008 6:26:25 PM)

I wonder if it is possible to resurrect this group buy :)

Fred Malibu -> RE: Rear Sway Bar Installed *Pics* (5/3/2008 12:45:21 PM)

^^^ yes

$150 for the rear
$110 for the front

call Nancy
800-367-5480

shipping comes from CA, so mine to NC was $30 for the rear bar (I just got the rear for now)
