dont know for sure, but might be a relay, same as curcuit breaker for higher amp circuits.

it must be the control relay. problem is they are 130 bucks. how much of a risk to frying my fan if i don't replace it?

i'm confused now. how could it be the relay if the fan still turns on at the correct temperature?
