I currently own a 1995 automatic Mustang GT with automatic, overdrive. It has a shift kit and 3.73s and headers and exhaust. The simple stuff. I was wondering about buying a ratchet shifter. What does this invole other than the ratched shifter component. Will it work well in conjunction with my shift kit? What are your opinions on ratchet shifters? I thought it might be fun to have one and play around with. lastly, would this be a good shifter? http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=1908&prmenbr=361

Ratchet shifters make autos a lot more fun to drive, and you have more control over your shifts. I have a B&M Pro-Stick for my '65 Pontiac and I love it! B&M makes the best automatic shifters. I have heard the Hammer is a good shifter but I have no personal experience with it. A big difference between the Hammer and a shifter like the Pro-Stick is the Pro-Stick is more of a racing shifter, and the Hammer looks like it belongs in a stock interior because it has a boot and all. Basically any shifter that is compatible with your transmission will work. Just pick one you like for style. Installing the shifter isn't hard, and it will come with instructions. You may have to install a new gear selector lever on the transmission, but you should be able to use your stock cable, but I'd really recommend upgrading to a B&M racing cable because they are a lot better than stock. Other than that, all you need to do is remove your stock shifter and put in your new one. You may have to modify your console depending on which shifter you get. I'd try to find that info out before you buy one. Take a look at the Quicksilver also. It's a really good shifter.

mine is the same was as yours 94black. From what i have heard its not the best idea to shift from gear to gear all the time in an automatic. Would this cause stress as well on the tranny?

Ratchet shifters are made to take abuse and hard shifts. Beat on your stock shifter a little and see how long it lasts before you break the handle right off. So no it's not pointless to buy a ratchet shifter for your car. Also, with a ratchet shifter you don't have to worry about overshifting like with the stock shifter when you are shifting manually, because on a stock shifter, you have to hold that button and slide the shifter up, and you have to pay attention to where you stop. That doesn't work too well when you're running neck-and-neck with somebody. With a ratchet shifter, you just bang the shifter forward without having to worry about it, and it only moves one gear at a time. Ratchet shifters have a lever that you usually use to move from 2nd to 3rd, but it's a lot easier to use than the button on the stock shifter because like on the Pro-Stick you just squeeze it when you grab the handle. You never have to look at your shifter to see what gear you're in. Shifting manually won't hurt an automatic because you're just moving the shift selector lever on the side of the transmission. The transmission will shift only as hard as it was built to, unless you install a shift kit. Shifting an auto manually is just a way to control the shift points and get better performance when you've got the pedal to the metal.

Well, as far as I know, no it doesn't hurt your auto tranny. When I first bought my Pontiac, it had a column shifted 2-speed auto, and I shifted manually all the time, even with that damn column shifter, and I never had any problems. Think of a ratchet shifter as similar to a short-throw for a manual transmission, because it controls shifter travel so you can't overshift, so you really shouldn't have any problems at all. People buy ratchet shifters so they CAN shift hard, and I've never heard of transmission failures because of it. Most automatic transmissions are built like tanks, so they can take a lot more abuse than a manual can. It might not hurt to install a shift kit also, and they're pretty cheap, but all that's going to do is control how hard and fast your transmission shifts. Regardless of which shifter you have, the transmission is only going to shift as hard as it's built. If you want to bark your tires in all gears 1st thru 3rd (provided your car has the torque for it) then definitely get a shift kit so you get positive hard shifts.
