I should have been more specific, I mean added to the car after it rolls from the dealership, but you bring up a good point, Haus. Guy I work with just bought a new STi, and that thing looks like major rice the way it is.

My personal definitions:
Rice = Appearance mods or "performance" mods that either improve the performance insignificantly or are downright useless, dangerous or even actually REDUCE the performance of a car just for looks. For instance: 20" rims on a car that came with 15" OEM wheels, performance stickers on a car without the actual performance items installed, a "Fart Can" welded onto the stock 1" pipe, a wing so large that it creates far more drag than any handling improvement it could possibly provide.
Tuner = A car with a small displacement motor that has been knowledgeably modded and that achieves respectable performance. For instance, a Honda Civic that can pull 13s or better in the quarter. These cars often have some "rice" appearance attributes, but if they can back it up with performance, I'll keep my mouth shut.

Here is my car... Many people will like it and many people will not... Just do what you like, but research your stuff before you go out and buy anything. It is good to have a good feel for all the stuff out there since there is so many ways to mod a stang... I have a cobra, so I have only done the bolt ons to it because I hardly ever race it and am really building it for show... Most recent good pic...
My car currently... Lambo doors just got installed along with a bunch of other stuff... I sold my rear bumper because I am getting Saleen side skirts and a rear bumper, so there is not a rear bumper on it right now...
EDIT: I love this forum and I will always post on it, but I have found that for Body and Appearance mods, I ask the guys on www.3.8mustang.com they seem to be a little more open to the unique stuff...
Why does anyone care what other people think. If you want a 7' wing, altezzas and Lamborghini doors on your car go for it.
This is the smartest thing I've seen in this thread. Rice is in the eye of the beholder. What one person considers rice, other people might not. If you check out my intro thread, you can see my last car. A lot of people will think it's rice, but I actually spent a lot of time researching each part before I EVER put in on my car. And I spared no expense, just as I won't with my Mustang. I won several trophies at car shows, including NOPI events, it was relatively quick, and turned a lot of heads. The stereo set up itself was worth over $2k. Just do what makes you happy. If you want to put a huge aluminum spoiler on your Mustang, do it, it's yours! If someone else doesn't like it, oh well, they're not driving it, right? I will warn you though, it you actually plan to go to car shows, you really do need to have a "central theme" to your car. Don't just go throwing parts together. And I happen to know several people with mostly cosmetic modifications whose cars are very tasteful, and very nice and clean. Albeit they're slow as molasses in January, they still pull trophies... Just my $.02
I think "pointless" modifications qualify for rice. When Maxwell House makes your muffler, no doubt it's "rice." However scissor doors (lambo) not necessarily. Because I've been thinking about getting them for mine, one simple reason. Goddamn parking lots! I usually park far away if I can, but there are times when you simply can't. You're stuck trying to fit in a small space cuz some dumb **** thinks the white lines are what you're supposed to rest the wheels on. Well open the door a little, lift up, and booyah you can still get out!
Gigantic spoilers on a car that can't go over 150mph, rice. A body kit that looks like it came off a hot wheels car, sure that's rice. But not all body kits, some compliment the body and help give a unique and stylish look. Personally I think the Street Scene front fascia on the 05-06 Mustangs look great. They aren't over the top and blend right into the stock body design. Almost like Ford designed it and not somebody from Japan for their latest video game.
Hood SCOOPS! Those are rice. If you have to glue or bolt on your "air dam" you bought from JC Whitney then it is. But functional hoods, Shaker, Cali Dream Hood (I believe that is, or has ability to be functional) aren't. Those also, like the previous comment, compliment the body. Give it an aggressive and again unique look. However keeping themselves from being over the top.
So personally I think rice has more to do with the application. Not just a broad label. Can't just say "all body kits" because not all are to the extreme. Some are quite subtle. And besides it's how we seperate ourselves just that little bit to show our individuallity (if you actually buy into that latest **** it's really about lookin sick!). If over the top, way too extreme, or looks like it came from a video game rather than from a practical model... I'd call it rice.
Although.... what category do spinner hubs fall under?
*edit* And yes, as previously stated. These are all of course only if you care about what others think. But it's your car, you shouldn't care. You should be getting what you like, what agrees with your taste in design. But then again as a Mustang, more than likely most of us like to have a car that more people accept because we like to show off and brag about our rides. Not necessarily being cocky, but it is afterall a status symbol. If it was only about function then we'd all be riding Yugos.
