I ordered a Kenwood reciever from Crutchfield with the XM external tuner. After I got it all dialed in to the sound I like and it sounds much better than the Shaker 500. There is more punch on the subs and the sound is much better and cleaner at higher volumes. It all cost less than $300 and you get a better sound. There is also a plus to it and you get a storage tray to go below the reciever and they give you all the hardware and instructions you need. The only drawback to it is you loose the 6 disk changer. If you listen to alot of CDs, you have to keep changing the CD to listen to others. You'll have to weight the difference that you want, good quality sound or convenience of not having to change the CDs. In my opinion, this is a good cost effective upgrade for much better sound.

Do you have a pic?
Also, how does the XM external tuner work, does this just allow you to hook up a current XM reciever to it?

Were you able to keep the factory amplifier ? if so did you need to replace the original harness?

I am getting a Pioneer Premium DEH-P780MP unit installed on 6/13 and will report back. Along with the new head unit I am getting the XM and Ipod options installed.

Sorry to be so late getting back to you all because I was traveling to San Diego. All I did was to replace the head unit (Shaker 500 unit only). I kept everything else in place. The install was easy since they gave you all the wiring harnesses and new mounting face to give you a compartment to put the remote. The model number of the head unit is a Kenwood KDC-MP4032. The unit is Sirius and XM ready. There are tons of features on the Kenwood. Here is the list of parts that I got.

Item Description Ship Qty B/O Qty Price Amount
700XMKENWO XM Direct Satellite Radio Pkg for Kenwood 1 0 0.00 0.00
113MP4032 Kenwood KDC-MP4032 CD/MP3/WMA/AAC Player What's Included 1 0 169.99 169.99

120705521 Ford Wire Harness receiver, 2003-up 1 0 0.00 0.00

000SRADIG FREE Crutchfield Guide: Satell Satellite Radio Car Installation 0.00 0.00

All you have to do is connect the wires from the new stereo to the wiring harness, pull out the old head unit, plug in the new head unit and your rocking. I got a good long time to listen to it today on the way to the airport and it is like night and day. The bass response is so much better, now I have a mid range adjustment and the highs are about the same but it has a nice clean sound. The total for all this was 3 cents under $270.00 with free shipping.

Out of curiosity, how did you hook up the amp? Did you have any issues with a "thumping" sound through subs during power on?

I hooked my Eclipse head unit to the factory sub amps and have no thumping problem. On advice from here, I hooked a 5V voltage regulator from eclipse amp-on wire to the factory sub wire. I never tried it without the voltage regulator so I don't know if it made a difference. I also put in some in-line 70hz low pass crossovers to keep the high range out of the subs.

I do have this annoying pop when the head unit is powered on. I asked Crutchfield about that and they said to get a voltage regulator from Radio Shack that only cost a few dollars. It seems there is 12V going to the AMP and it needs to be 5V and thus the voltage regulator. I have been out of town this week so I haven't had a chance to install one. Other than that pop, the system has a great sound.

Here's the voltage regulator in question:

5v Voltage Regulator

I don't have the manual on hand, but if I remember right the two outside pins go to your amp-on wire on the head unit and a ground wire while the inside pin goes to the amp-on wire to the subs. Check the instructions for polarity because you'll fry it if you get it backwards. Also pick up a little PC board to solder it to. Here's some photos from what I did. A bit sloppy as I haven't done soldering for a decade but it works.

The easiest way out is to get an after market head unit. I don't think it is just that easy to add the sub for the Shaker 1000. After you replace the head unit, you will have plenty of punch in your current subs to make up for the 1000.

Can anyone with an aftermarket CD and Satellite radio post pics of how the satellite text dsplays? I'm curious as to how the artist/title/channel information actually shows up since none of the stereo shops around here have satellite actually hooked up to demo it.

That all depends on which brand and head unit you buy. Some are one line with auto or manual scroll and some 2 line text with auto or manual scroll. So it all depends on who makes it and how many lines of text it is able to display.

I'd want as much text as possible - that's why I'd like to see some pics of any of them with the Sat function enabled. I'm terrible at remembering artist/song information so it's nice to have the text there - even if it scrolls like the RDS function does.

that was my idea as well. although i admit i was hoping there was already a harness back there and i just had to plug in and play.

I have also fell on love with the MTX enclosure that appears to be factory that can hold a 12" sub. it comes powered and non powered...

i just like my in dash 6 disc mp3 player...
