Haha I hear that 05SDI. Ya im 16 i have a 65 coupe and all the kids I know have ricers, most of em trash it but a FEW of them acctually appreciate it. The best thing was when a kid with a ricer, with front and rear bumper painted different colors and a huge muffler on it and a wing that fell off, said that my car was a hunk of scrap metal (its been restored and resto moded and its in GREAT condition, not to make my car sound that awesome or anything :P) When ever I see him on the road he always revs that little ricer up, goin about 25 and makin noise like a freakin prop plane. I could take him down now, just wait till the 331

I go to a gas station one town over because they have a slightly higher octane. For years when I drove by it I'd always see some sort of classic car, so asked why they all went there. First time I gassed up 2 weeks ago (at the full service pump) the kid (17 or 18) came over, told him to fill it up, and he said "does the gas go in the back?"
Uhm, ok.
I went back on Friday for half a tank of gas which I didn't really need, but I was trying to gauge my gas mileage, plus as I drove by I saw a Shelby there and wanted a closer look at it, but by the time I got through traffic, it was gone. Kid comes up to the car, different kid than last time, I tell him to fill it up, and he says "where does the gas go?"
Hey Pammie, why are you burning high octane fuel? Unless you have a really hopped up 6 cylinder with 10:1 compression, 87 octane will work just fine. Just curious......

For the same price as "regular" octane, I get a point or two higher, and I was told that it was better for the car. Was the person who told me this wrong?
I'm still not sure if they put in hardened valve seats when they rebuilt the engine so I'm a little concerned that I should be putting in an additive, too.
I am burning 87 octane, and Ol' Yeller just purrs like a kitten. Try burning a tank full of 87 and see if you get any pinging. If you do, then adjust your timing a tad and see if the pinging goes away. I am also adding a few caps full of lead substitute with each tank. I know for certain that I do not have hardened seats. If you aren't sure, then adding the substitute won't hurt even if you have hardened seats. I am using Redline brand of lead substitute, but I suppose just about any brand you can pick up at a parts store will work. Just don't get the stuff designed for off road vehicles.

yeah, 87 worked fine in mine, i put the "good" grade stuff in once and there was minimal difference. from what i understand, the higher octane is formulated not to detonate as easily (i.e. not detonate from a hot spot, instead of from the spark). just gotta get the bolts tapped outta my head and than take my intake to the shop to have the bolts tapped out of. (lol)
I kept forgetting but this thread reminded me and I just called the shop that rebuilt my engine. According to the owner, hardened valve (exhaust) seats were installed. He said I could get gas anywhere -- even though the higher octane doesn't cost me more -- and said just to be sure to change the oil after the first 500 miles.
He also said hardened or not, no additive would have been needed.
hey Clutch, why dont you do your heads yourself and save you some money???? Just drill out the out bolts, and go out and rent a tap and die. or even buy a small set. I did the heads on my 67 F-100. It wasn't too hard. It was actually alittle fun, and i felt great when it was all finished. Oh and Pammie. That guy is wrong. if you dont have hardened seats, you should use a lead additive, or it'll tear up your seats, and then you will start losing compression, smoking, etc.

I didn't want to argue with the owner of one of the largest engine rebuilding shops in Massachusetts, but I've been told by at least 20 people that without the hardened seats, you need an additive.

Yeah the use of lead substitutes in these old cars with soft seats has been a controversy for years now. I use it, and I feel good about it. I figure it won't hurt, and it may do some good.

I'm kinda scared of fudging it up! I may try to do this myself tho. Pops has got a tap and die set in his workshop in the basement (we got's no garage). Hmmm, maybe I can get them to let me have the other section of the basement for all my stang stuff? Ah, should prolly clean my room before I ask them that, cause they'll tell me to anyway! LOL! Any clue what size bolts those are?
EDIT: Any tips on how to tell if my seats are hardened? What type of additive should i use (when i get her running again)?
