I have a 289. How do I get the seal out of the timing chain cover? I really don't want to buy a specialty tool as I'm not planning on doing this again anytime soon.

get a seal puller you can also use it to remove front and rear wheel seals when you have to work on the wheel baering it is a cheap tool less then $10 at autozone or anyother parts store.

i just changed my seal out of my timing chain cover and all i used was a flat screwdriver and a hammer... it came out fine...just take your time and it will eventually come out nice and smooth.
Yeah. i used a screw driver and hammer. The easy part was getting it out!! When i went to install the new one, i installed it, and put the sleeve on the harmonic balancer. I DID NOT put that glue stuff for the sleeve. I think the sleeve backed out, and then cut the seal or something. because it is just spinning oil everywhere.
