canton -> Mass Air (3/18/2003 1:57:08 AM)

I have an '86 coupe 5.0, i NEED to put mass air on it before i do any major engine upgrades, i'm just curious what brand/size, i plan on doing a cold air kit and throttle body at the same time, and all the same sizes to keep things smooth. What do you guys think would be best? Future gt-40 or twisted wedge heads, and a new RPM 2 intake.

Thanks

I bought the 76mm kit from C+L for about 189.00. The kit was awesome. It can be calibrated for different injector sizes so make sure you get it for the size injectors you have or plan on getting. They can be recalibrated for about 30.00 so no big deal if you change injectors in the future. As far as converting to mass air do yourself a favor and get a rebuilt computer from a parts store, trust me, the headaches you will save from getting a junkyard one with no warranty. However go to the junkyard and get 4 wires directly from the factory plug at the computer so they will just push right in to your plug and fit the way they are supposed to. If you pull the red plastic piece out the wires come out pretty easily. You can find a diagram in a repair manual or the net as to where the 4 new wires go. I did the conversion in about an hour so it's not too bad. Dont waste your money on a 25 dollar plug you can make for free yourself.

damn dave, that was beautiful!!! i like your economic thinking. by the way, i agree, all throttle no bottle. i trying to see how far i can get before i supercharge it. so far i'm somewhere in the mid 11's. how bout yourself?

Spike if you like economic thinking, go with the bottle.!!!!!

spike306 -> Mass Air (3/20/2003 9:54:42 PM)

ahh, come on now lloyd. i know your right, but you know that's not my style. nice try, but i'm not converted yet lol.

I never ran mine so I have no idea my E.T. My 357 only has 200 miles on it and I am on my third T-5 so I am a little leary to race that combo right now, maybe someday! Any other questions about mods feel free to ask, I have done everything you can imagine and I am cheap so I can give you the most economical way to do something if it exists. Dave

You have a 357 and you're still running a T-5?!? You are brave, my friend.

Thats what its all about!!!!

spike306 -> Mass Air (3/22/2003 4:26:19 PM)

never, you can't make me do it lol. oh, by the way canton, you might wanna do some work on the heads before you start trying to cram all that air into the stock ones

lloydchristmas -> Mass Air (3/22/2003 5:35:22 PM)

I agree. The 86 heads were the worst flowing heads ever.

spike306 -> Mass Air (3/22/2003 7:00:06 PM)

gt-40's are pretty good to start off with, and there not that expensive

canton -> Mass Air (3/22/2003 8:02:46 PM)

Yeah, I was gonna grab some gt-40s actually, i'm not sure if i should go with aluminum or iron.. what do ya think?

spike306 -> Mass Air (3/22/2003 8:41:31 PM)

well, aluminum is lighter, but probably more expensive. depends on how much you wanna spend

noslow50 -> Mass Air (3/23/2003 12:17:58 AM)

About the bottle vs. boost...

They are both cheating if you consider the bottle cheating.

Forced induction is where you put more oxygen (or air) into the engine than it would normally take. This includes turbos and blowers. Nitrous is also included since when it's pressurized and hits 575 the nitrogen and oxygen aren't bonded together anymore. Nitrous is an "oxydizer".

You can get pretty comparible power, with less cash, less complex equipment, and less weight with giggly gas.
