View Full Version : Powerhouse Turbo Installed!!!!

That’s right, you read it correctly!!! The 1st powerhouse customer unit is installed in my car, and the 2nd unit is installed in Excepcion13’s car!!!!! We are at powerhouse right now waiting for them to wrap up Excepcion13’s dyno tune.

About a month ago, I heard Mike was looking for a automatic for the first turbo install to document the install. Well I looked up the location, and they were about 6 hours from me in DC, though I’m originally from PA. So I called Mike @ Powerhouse for the free install deal and my luck held true, he needed an auto. In fact, he needed 3 cars, and I figured, hell, I should call Robert (Excepcion13) and convince him turbo was the way to go, which didn’t take much! LOL.

So, two weeks ago, we drove our stangs up to Girard PA (right outside of Erie) and drove a rental back down. Today, two weeks later we are finally picking up our cars. We just didn’t get Turbo’s though, check out the list of mods on this massive trip:

Excepcion13

• Powerhouse Turbo @ 8 PSI w/Intercooler
• Powerhouse UCA
• Powerhouse LCA
• Powerhouse Panhard Bar & Brace

Rygen

• Powerhouse Turbo @ 8 PSI w/Intercooler
• Boost Gauge
• H20 Temp Gauge (switching out for a electronic AF wideband once Powerhouse gets it in)
• Powerhouse UCA

Now, we won’t be able to post dynojet numbers and track slips for about a week. We may hit the 1/8th track Wednesday night to get some preliminary slips. Also keep in mind Powerhouse uses a Mustang dyno. So, we should be back home in about 8 hours time, at that time I will post some final mustang dyno numbers, or call one of the board members to post them as my laptop battery is dying!

Man, I can’t wait to go to the track!!!! I’m dying to get Stella on the track, the wait is killing me!!!!

Also, here are some pics for you guys, more to come along with videos. Enjoy!!!

I'm about to give it a test drive in 30 minutes, however, my laptop battery is dying. Doh, forgot to bring the plug. What I will do is call a member to post some details while I'm driving it down from PA to DC. It's awsome. And, the JBA's sound awesome on this car, I think they sound better than my flows. Excepcion13 has the JBA's on his and it sounds awesome with the turbo.

Congrats dude!!! This is so awesome!!! WOOHOO!!!

Ok... it did just get off the phone with Rygen. His car put down 299RWHP on a Mustang Dyno.... so figure right around 320RWHP to 325RWHP on a DynoJet! WOW!! Excp13 put down 303RWHP!

Rygen got on the gas while we were on the phone... You could really hear his car absolutely ROARING in the background!!!! I can't wait to see some video clips!!! LOL!

Drive safe you guys!

EDIT! I was wrong! Exp13's 1st pull was 303... his final pull was a mind blowing 328RWHP!! on a Mustang Dyno!!!!

ill let you know this week TJ. And 328rwhp on a mustang dyno is closer to 360-365rwhp on a dynojet lol. 312rwhp on a mustang dyno is about 345 on a dynojet... so thats where i get my numbers from.
But ya, ill make sure to be in contact with mike a lot the next few weeks. Hopefully we can get this group buy done by the end of june, or early july.

lol the closest thing i have to a turbo is the intercooler and the piping, ohh i just got a collector last week, to turn the 2 exhaust pipes into one before the turbo (like a y pipe)

maybe you could convince powerhouse to ship me a turbo for free ??? :D then i wouldnt be that far behind you guys!!!

Ok just found out E-13's 328RWHP was at 9.5 psi not the 8 or 8.5psi like Rygn's still nice but this explains reason for the difference, I am not looking to run 9.5psi at this point but nice to know you can just dail it up per installed mech knob or electronic inside the drivers cabin if you want. Still want to see the group price.. :)

fazm

ya rygen was 8.5psi, e13 was 9.5 psi.

in order to get group buy rates, im gonna need to know who ACTUALLY wants to get one. Not just get one if 15 other ppl get one lol. becacuse if 15 ppl say they are going to buy, and we get a price, and only 4 end up buying, there probably wont be a discount.

electronic boost controller ;)

lol i dont really like them because some kid can jump in, bring your boost to 32, and if you dont notice, youll drive away and blow your car up

same for in cabin mechanical controllers, (not so bad if they are under the hood)

On the Powerhouse turbo you have to change the spring on the wastegate. Which involves getting under the car. That might be something you could add though. You'd probably want to change the tune for different boost levels though.

Yep I was lucky enough to have the a rare LS6 454 underrated at 450HP was said stock over 500 HP, 4spd blue/w white stripes or cousre I built it up cam, Edlebrock, Holly 850 DP, had 4 bolt mains, with the open chamber rect port heads, Hooker tuned headers 410's etc etc and as you should well know talk about super bad wheel hop ladder bars was a must have atleast with my car. Our cars today why anywhere from $40,000 - $100,000 matching numbers.

But lets not hijack Rygens thread :)

TJ
05-21-2006, 04:23 PM
Yep like Jimp said on the Powerhouse it has to be done at the waste gate and it takes a little time with hand tools, the mech knob is the way to go IMO but I am not sure never got a chance to ask Mike if the tune needed to be changed going from 8psi - 9psi which I also relayed the above info to Rygen about few weeks ago.

1- are you sure it was a mustang dyno?
2- when was their dyno calibrated last?
3- are they corrected numbers ?
4- can I get a free one ?
5- can you post a dyno sheet?
6- can you go get a dyno on a dynojet so we can compare?

@ Rygen, will be lookin forward to all your good results, sounds like you will be getting noticed at the track even more,

@ screaming, we have seen too many surprises from you, we'll be watching for the Mistress's latest surprise as well.

results seem to be getting better for this 4.0 all the time, a big thanks to all the guys who have risked their cars and opened their wallets to test some of these new mods so we could see the results! kudos to you.

its 4800 with the tuner and the tune for the itnercooled, or 4000 for the non intercooled. there is going to be a 100-200 discount (hopefully, undetermined as to how much) if you already have an xcal2 (not xcal1, or diablo, only xcal2). Hopin to get a few hundred off with the group pbuy, i think 4400 for the intercooled kit is a good deal, but 4200 would be even better (with xcal2 discount of course). Even at 4800, this kit is amazing. 9.5 psi for 350+rwhp. the vortech kit is makin 305rwhp at that boost, and the procharger is like 311

That kind of power is going to cost more than just the 4200-4800 for the turbo though right? I didn't think our stock cars where rated to last very long on anything over 300hp. Will this also require an upgrade to the rear end, drive shaft, gears putting it well over 5 grand? Just curious cause I may be wrong about everything I've just asked, but would like to know. I'd like to see that kind of power for under 5k, but this is my daily driver after all and want it to last several years without braking.

You could put it on a completely stock car. An LSD will help you hook up better, stock gears are fine though. Mike tells me they are using a stock V6 driveshaft and a stock 4.0 running at 12PSI and hitting 11.80s at the track. And it just wasn't a one time deal either, they have been running 11s since last year. An 8PSI turbo shouldn't hurt your car and will be easier on the engine than a SC.

Disclaimer this just IMO & thoughts don't listen to me!

Giddy Mike has already been running this thing at 400RWHP@ 12psi on a stock long block, trans, and clutch but like anything your mileage may vary/risk, it looks like the 8-8.5 is the sweet spot and safe for long engine life but only time will tell 100% as with any power adder including superchargers & nitrous or two stage systems.. Yes also I agree its not only the amount of boost you are running but also the amount of power you are making per cylinder example if you were making 400RWHP at 8-8.5 psi I would seriously question the abiltly of the motor to last a long life, but at the same making 340-360RWHP @8- 8.5psi would be a much better as far as engine's llife span.

Thinking 8 psi really should be good for long life but no one will know for sure on any of these power adders including superchargers & nitrous untill some good amount of time passes.

The stock drive train should be fine with an auto one exception being if running a 3k or higher stall converter w/DR's then the the 7.5 comes to mind. But for me with a stick to set this car up right for some serious track use the rearend, driveshaft, tranny, shifter, clutch and flywheel/flexplate would have to go for me thats including if I went with a supercharger also ( not so with an auto IMO)because thats the way I am and from experience and research, not saying that has to be done no proof its just IMO and how I would do it. Now occasional track use and DD of course with a TC or SC I wouldn't have a need to change out those items with a stick.

One thing seeing a V8 run 12's is in no way that impressive or nearly as impressive as a V6 doing it and poss high 11's! and that what makes a V6 build up so much more fun and is just dam impressive.

Ok got it thanks (checked my info) but looks like you have to modify it a little first according to this guy who dropped in a 8.8 in his 05 Mustang S197 see quote below.

What if any problems would you run into keeping it single exhaust? I really like the sound I get from my Ford Racing muffler and think it opened up the exhaust quite a bit. I'd really like to be able to have that much power and still look stock!

Quicksilver. in answer in your question yes you will end up losing some hp. with F/I ESPECIALLY a turbo you want NO backpressure as opposed to our 6ers with bolt ons need some back pressure for low end torque. but duals would be preferrable.

Thanks everyone. Robert and I were amazed at the power these cars put down. Unfortunately it was too crowded on the high way to safely get a video. I will work on that tomorrow and/or Tuesday and post asap.

We also need to get exhaust clips, the turbo changes the sound. Our mufflers actually growl more!!!!

Now for some pics, just took them, enjoy:

Also, I found a place to test the hard launch up in Erie near Powerhouse. Well, lets just say I have to learn to launch all over again. My car broke loose on 1 st and then again on 2 nd on the same launch!!!! This is with 275’s on the rear.

The power is insane!!

I got the autometer A pillar with autometer gauges. I plan to add a air flow wide band in the next week or two. Powerhouse already prepped the car for it. I just put up pics of the gauge, enjoy.

Correct, a dual (thanks Jimp!...been a long day) is not needed and from the look of the kit, easier on the install. A install with duals requires another Y pipe, and depending on what exhaust pipes you have (for duals) and mufflers, it may require some...tweaking. I would give Mike a call about dual exhaust.

And yes, the V6 is running 11's consistently.

Good to see you in the house :)

So can you describe the difference when at WOT vs the 100 shot Can you really feel a small, medium or big difference upper end say the last 1/8 :) and how about mid range RPM if you paid attention to on your launches and any other comments regarding performance you noticed. Looking foward to the dyno sheet and new dyon on a reg dynojet and your further comments in the weeks to come.. I am dying to see a 1/4 mile run!!! and what the ET will be, I saw you mention HP&TQ by 28-2900 nice!

Actually, when I floored it, it pulled similiar to the juice. Almost as hard, but instead....it keeps pulling!!!! So on the 2nd 1/8, this thing will pull like a banshee. While my juice would still provide some power, but not like this!

I will have to launch at a lower rpm, and practice. It spins like mad on the launches. I really need to work on that. I think I will be forced to get DR's.

Oh yes differently in the twelves Mike has done it 12.60's I believe at 9psi but also remeber he has a stick and poss 4K-5K launch and the car has to hook and Rygens and yours are setup good so should be able to hook without a problem with DR's. The thing I want to see also is Mike did it with I think 3.50's or 3.55's and Rygns has 373's like to compare the slips 1/8, 60' 1/4 and esp the trap speed vs the 350's to see how the 373's work and also see real world non pro times and on an auto. Even if for some reason Rygn was to only run low 13's on his first outing we know he will be capable of 12's with practice on launhces. Just there are some differences here that will be interesting to see.

SC needs HP to make HP, I.E. engine needs to spin up to generate boost, thus harder on the engine. Turbo uses exhaust gases to make boost, does not use HP to make HP. TC makes boost at a lower RPM as well and makes more power at less boost, so you do not need to run over 10lb of boost to get significant gains. This should also help:

http://american-speed.com/**********/forums/showthread.php?t=117

http://american-speed.com/**********/forums/showthread.php?t=119

Keep in mind that the newer turbo systems have come a long way. I have NO turbo lag on my system. It comes on instantly and at 2900 rpm which is sooner than the SC's for our cars except the EE.

Ok, I'm no expert...but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night! SCs are crank driven so they take HP to spin. So if they make 350RWHP, the engine is actually putting out like 380 or more, I don't know the exact figures. Also, there's something about the turbo keeping back pressure on the valves. I don't really understand it all but it's supposedly true, turbos are easier on the engine. Maybe someone smart will expand upon my feeble attempt at an explanation.

I have contacted 5 manufacturors about CA smog legal versions, it has been a few months but this was their replys when I did

whipple- no plans for a V6 model
xcharger- will have CA smog version
vortech- has 05 smog version available now - 06 needs certified and in the process
procharger- will not be smog legal for CA
powerhouse turbo- will not be smog legal for CA

if there becomes enough interest I personally believe this will change, if it hasn't already, sure cut the options for us CA folks, and most suppliers of ALL parts will sell them to you even if they are not smog legal, part of their disclaimer.

Ok, had to add a few more things. On this whole deal, Robert and I dealt with Mike and Steve through the whole thing. Let me tell you, these guys love their work, and it shows in their customer service, and in their work.

Mike never got tired of our endless questions, in fact, if we didn’t stop from hanging around the shop, chit chatting, we could have gone on for hours. That is how much passion he has for this stuff.

And lastly, Powerhouse will not sell you parts just to sell you parts. They are a great shop and really look at your goals, and make recommendations based on your goals. They won’t try to sell you something you don’t need, or replace a stock part that really performs well even under track conditions.

So it’s a no brainier to do business with them again. Trust me on that. They are a top notch shop.

I agree 100%. I've made three stops @ PowerHouse since October of last year and have equally flooded Mike & Steve with emails. They do great work! My car is up there as we speak for the V8 turbo & a forged bottom-end sb. I can't say enough about their work ethic and quality. The wife loves the idea of getting a turbo, but my wallet is saying no (for now!). Best wishes to Rygen - thanks for keeping the 4.0 fire lit.

LOL. Do it man, the wife is right. Make her happy, then you both win.

It's not a problem, they just had to do some custom work. But that is required on a lot of dual setups on our cars. I will get pictures of my dual setup under the car this weekend.

I don't see it as a problem. When you order the turbo, Powerhouse can provide you with a Y pipe to come out from the turbo so you can go duals. But from there, you will have to do some cutting and custom work to make them fit right. This Turbo system is designed for a V6, duals do not come with our car stock.

I mean, we are talking like 70 bucks of custom work at an exhaust shop here. The Y pipe, and some adjusting of the rear pipes and fitment.

How big is the largest part of this setup? I need to find out if the USPS will ship it to germany. Then I would have to find someone who can install it! Otherwise, I wont be getting this till at least september or october of 2009 and only then if I still have the mustang.

300-330HP on the Autobahn would be nice!

Well, I would call powerhouse, but all the tubing came apart in what looked like 2x2 sq ft pieces and the turbo components are pretty small. But I would definitely give them a call.

Ok everyone, I took a few minutes to make a video this morning. Keep in mind this is at the most, 4-5lb’s of boost, probably closer to 4. It is difficult to make a video with max boost and the BOV because you have to find a safe place where there are no drivers around.

Just to give you an example, near max boost will put you over 110mph in a heart beat. So I will continue to search for a place to do it so you can see it.

But for now, here is an appetizer, enjoy!

you should do a video with the camera outside your car like the ones you did before..

an idea so we could all get a chance to listen to the turbo spool up and the BOV, would be to be at a roll at about 20mph, and in neutral as your pass the camera give it a shot of gas.. at that speed the goverener wont stop you at 4000rpm

Todd your car was an exception, Mostly because when you had a custom x-pipe installed, they cut the stock Mustang GT mid pipes to an odd length.

If someone is using the stock, uncut Mustang GT mid pipes (or equil.) then the dual Y pipe will bolt right in, with no mods.
