Something else I would like to add to this thread about the Sat Nav and the hand brake. When the hand brake is off (driving) you can't edit or add a address or location to the Navigation , it just locks you out so you have to pull over and put the hand brake on to change the settings.
I am going to put a toggle switch on the hand brake wire so I can fiddle whilst moving, not so much for me but if I ask my GF to make a change she can do it.
Thanks.

Alrighty, Good thread so far, thanks for all the help. Especially Kcary! Now, I have the Z1, the headlight flasher circuit and the regulator all ready to go in on Thurs or Fri Prob. I am doing the install myself so am looking for just a few more tips. Anyone install the Z1 VSS using the orange/white wire in the dash? To those that did, have you checked in the hardware menu of the Z1 to make sure it is reading correct? Just seems like it should work and it's a heck of a lot easier than running to the engine bay. Just want to make sure it works properly before hacking into a wire. Also, how much room is left behind the Z1 once installed? I am thinking I want to recess it more than it is with the F150 dash kit, as from the pics above, it appears to be sticking out a bit far for my tastes.
Here is a document that I got from another thread awhile back. It is supposed to be the shaker 500 diagram. The speed sensor wire is on connector J1 pin 14 and the illumination wires are also on the same connector pin 3 + and 4 -. I haven't purchased my Z1 yet but its coming. Hope this helps someone out. I had to convert the doc from a PDG to a jpg so if you have problems reading PM me and I can email it to you as a pdf. I don't know how to post a pdf. Greg
I want to order the Pioneer AVH Headunit and the F150 Dash Kit, this is going to be my first install/experience with audio components. What else will I need for this unit to work, like wiring etc...
Will the install be fairly easy and how do you remove the stock shaker 500?

The idea of putting a toggle switch on the hand brake wire will not work. In addition to detecting if the hand brake is in use, the unit keeps track of your speed (yes, even if your VSS wire isn't hooked up). If you're moving faster than 3 mph, the unit automatically locks out the controls. This is why people who have intentionally grounded the hand brake wire still can't access the menus or play dvds in motion.
At this point, the only way to override this feature is the headlight flashing technique. If you look around, a lot of people are doing it different ways. Some people manually flash the lights, some purchase a circuit to do the job for them. What's been found with this is that timing is everything.
If you're not familiar with this, I would suggest you visit www.avic411.com. When doing this manually, you'll have to tie the ILL wire on the stereo directly into your headlight switch (I've heard some mixed things about using the ILL wire in attached to the wiring harness). With the automatic circuit, it can be tied into a number of things (ILL wire, Dimmer wire, 12V constant)
The headlight flashing works just fine and from what I've heard from people, the circuit the guy at avic411 is selling works perfectly too. You just have to time you flashing properly when you start up and make sure the hand brake is off when you do. For people such as myself who would take advantage of the override so infrequently, this seems to be the best option.
I havn't found a need for the headlight flashy thing yet, but then I have yet to take any really long trips. I should probably test it out to make sure I put the wires in the right place...

I just finished my install and had to run the wire to the engine bay after all. The White w/ Orange wire in the medium Radio connector does NOT work properly although it does give the Z1 a signal of sorts. Just not the correct one. It was reading incorrect speeds and not reading distance on the 3D calibration screen. Once I hooked the VSS to the blue w/ yellow at the PCM, everything functioned properly.
Thanks for the help all! Made this a smoooooth install!
Had my Z1 installed today. Was told by the installer that he's searched and searched for how to hook up the VSS on mustangs. He's done this install in about a dozen cars and says he's given up trying to get the speed sense working (sounds like the PCM wire may be the key?)
Got the Z1 with iPod cable just under $2,400 including tax and installation. Just so people are aware circuit city is running a sale for $2,099 online including installation. Use this to get a good bargain at your installer of choice
Installer used the clip for the mic and clipped it to my overhead lights. The GPS antenna he preferred to place near the front windshield on the passenger side. I asked about the rear deck and he said dark tints can interfere with the signal.
The improved sound is well worth it.

The mic isn't really that noticeable in that spot.
At first I really noticed the gps antenna since I was hoping they could mount it on the rear deck. I have a big gnarly white fast track transmitter I need to mount in the same general area soon anyway for toll road access. I'm sure once I have that mounted the gps antenna will blend into my subconscious mind and fade away.

Thanks for all the info on this thread. I have an 05 Mustang and just ordered the AVIC-Z1. I'm planning on installing it myself. I saw alot of discussion about how to bypass the lockout (light switching and AVIC forum board installation), but I also noticed in the link you gave us for showing the VSS hookup that there is also an alternate wiring description for the lockout bypass. Does this work? Are there any reasons why not to do this? It seems to be the simplest.
For those of you about to install your Z1's. Just to reiterate from a previous post. I just installed my Z1 in my 06 GT. The ILL wire on the factory wiring harness will not work with the Z1. I had to route the wire to the headlight switch, pin 2. Thanks whoever posted this info in a previous post/thread, it saved me another headace. I would have never figured out why it wasn't working otherwise.
I have a 2003 gt mustang with mach and i wanted to install a avic z1 in my mustang and i was wondering if somebody has like a guide to install and telling me what i need. do i really need a after market amplifier? cause when i go to crutchfield to order it say i need it
