Yeah its a real pain getting it all out again I did it about 3 times but I wouldn't have known what I do now unless I did..the bad siruis unit didnt help matters either. Post some pics when you get a chance!

ahhhhh, yes, that helps a lot- The thing that was really confusing me was the presence of that second wire on the harness- It seemed counter intuitive that I would run a regulator in from one cable, and out to the other which is why I was getting so bogged down... So you crimped the two wires from the harness together, ran that to the input portion of the regulator, grounded a piece of stereo wire from that second connection to something behind the dash, and then ran the output portion to the amp wire on the Z1... That seems reasonable...

Thanks again for your help.

Jake

You could have done what I did, use a 4k7 resistor to join the 2 cables together...

I SURE WISH I'D SEEN THIS THREAD EARLIER.. NOW I'VE GOTTA GET THAT SPEED SENSE WIRE THRU AND INSTALLED (I just capped it off)

BUT, the Z1 is an incredible stereo

I did hear about using the resistor too but already had the 5v reg which seems to be doing the job, I did hear of people grounding the parking brake and such but I wanted my Z1 fully operational which it is now and I love it. Used sat nav for the first time the other day and it was spot on....wonder what pioneer will roll out next!

Very Helpful post!! Just to be clear...cut the 2 blue/white wires from the harness to the sub. Crimp or solder in the voltage regulator based on the input/output pic you posted, and solder in a wire for ground?? Is that basically it?? I had an AV shop install my Avic-Z1 on Wed....love it, but I have the initial popping thing going on. I am bringing it back to them today....already bought the voltage regulator, just want to be 100% what to tell them.

Thanks!

Well I got the car back with it installed just in time for my vacation I've been on for the past week. Can't post pics yet as my girlfriend somehow lost my camera! However, I can't get the light flip thing to allow the override. Is there some trick to it? I just start the car, and flip the lights on and off; however, when I take off my parking brake, it's not overriden and a lot of things are locked out. I'm wondering if maybe something wasn't hooked up right by the installer. Thanks for any info.

And I will get pics of the center console iPod adapter install as soon as I get access to a camera.

Just wanted to mention this for anyone looking to purchase or currently own the AVIC-Z1 with XM. Sears currently has the GEXP10XMT XM NavTraffic Tuner for $149.99. Pretty good price compared to Circuit City at 199 and Best Buy 299 (atleast last time I checked). Usually BBY or CC will pricematch competitors like Sears if you print the online ad. Sears only has it available for shipping so what you can do is go to an electronics store that price matches and pick it up :) CC gave me 10% of the difference too, so, I got a pretty good deal on it.

Have you been here: http://avic411.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=20&sid=9e3993e4b2ce2f68b072654d04c8733b

From my reading, and your description, it sounds like you are doing it wrong. I think the sequence is, 1) get in the car, 2) release parking brake, 3) turn on car, (power, not engine), 4) turn the lights on and off during the power-up phase where the Pioneer logo is displayed. From what I gather, it is the AVIC sensing the lights turning OFF that overrides the lockouts. If you pull the parking brake, it will negate the override and you will have to do it again.

Someone who has this thing installed lemme know if I have it right...

Hi Kcary

You will need to make sure that you have the hand brake OFF to begin with, it won't work with it on otherwise when you have done the flashes and put the brake off it resets what you have just done!

Have you got the illumination wire correctly connected so when your driving at night and switch your head lights on the unit slightly dims and the map background turns from light to dark? If not then this is another problem as the hack won't work without it, not hard to fix if you need to do it.

Thanks

Hi Herknav, yes thats 100% correct, I usually flicker the lights a couple of times during boot up but don't think it matters to much! I also installed the board that the guy is selling on the avic forums and it works great :)

Thanks

Ah ok, missed the part where brake has to be off to start with. Guess that will do it! Reading comprehension 101! The illumination wire is hooked up properly, at least, the light functionality with the map and whatnot is working as it should.

I just ordered the Z1 and the F-150 bracket, they should be here by Friday. Since I'm thousands of miles from home and doing my own install, any special tools required?

Also, I always drive with my lights on out of habit, is there a way to turn off night mode, or am I going to need to put a switch on the illumination lead? How long do you think the install will take with no extras?

Thanks

Think your going to have to put a toggle switch on that if you always drive with your lights on, don't think there is any other way of doing it!

No special tools needed, just a long socket to remove center panel (no 10 did it for me) and a screw driver.

First off, kudos to everyone who has contributed to this very helpful thread, especially Outatime.

I'm in the process of installing an Avic Z1 on my baby. Everything seemed to be going smoothly, but I'm having some issues finding some of the wires. Real quickly:

1) Routing past the engine up to the PCM for the VSS seems to be a real pain. I had the Shaker 500 and it has speed-sensitive volume, so there must be a VSS line by the head unit, right? On the wiring harness I have from Crutchfield, there is a small connector for the subwoofer and a large connector for power and the other speakers. On the Shaker 500 headunit, however, there is also a medium-sized connector with two wires (in particular, a white/orange wire). I'm wondering if this is in fact the speed signal? Does anyone know? If not, is my reasoning that there should be a VSS line by the headunit incorrect?

2) Outatime, I'm having a bit of trouble telling from your pic which line I need to connect from the light switch for the illumination. Can you tell me which color you spliced into for this?

3) Where is the reverse light wire? I'm hoping to avoid running that purple wire all the way to the trunk.

Thanks in advance for all of your help. This thread is great.

I guess no one saw this. For others who are wondering, I figured it out by myself.

1) There is a speed signal into the Shaker unit (hence the speed-sensitive volume). It is pin 14 on the medium-sized connector (white/orange wire). Not sure if it functions as well as the VSS up front, but I am reading the speed (though the GPS probably does that as well).

2) The headlight dimmer wire which you need to splice into is pin 2 on the headlight switch. It is a yellow/light blue wire. I tied that right into the orange/white wire on the Avic and it worked fine.

Not sure if there's a closer reverse light than the trunk, but I didn't hook that up and the unit seems to work great.

I'm a little confused on the factory options for the '06, are there 3?

1) A plain factory radio
2) Shaker 500
3) Shaker 1000

Is the wiring significantly different? I had what I believe to be a bare bones factory system with the standard ford wiring harness, plus an additional smaller plug in the radio. the radio did have speed sensitive volume control. Should I there fire be able to splice into pin 14, the white/orange one for VSS?

Did you check in hardware to see if it has a VSS reading?

I got mine installed tonight, I like it already. I didn't connect the Vss yet or the parking brake or reverse Cam. The only thing I plan to install still is the vss but so far accuracy doesn't seem to bean issue at all, even the parking lot surrounding my apartment complex is dead on.

Hello

Sorry was away at the beach for a few days and missed the post, if the vss wire you found is acurate when driving then thats a good tip as its a real pain in the ass to get that vss wire from the Z1 to the front of the engine for that square connector, maybe you can report more on that when you have fully tested it.

Reverse wire I don't know if its much use for everyday use or if it does something that I don't know about but the only reason I installed mine is for the reverse camera other than that I can't really see the point installing it, I heard there is a wire at the front of the car near the fuse box but in the end I just pulled the trucking out and fed the wires to the rear of the car and spliced to the reverse light, I was also running my GPS antenna back there too.

Seems like you got everything else spot on, well done.

I imagine they would use the same harness for all three radios so they can just pop them in when someone orders.

I am still not sure about this Shaker vss till its tested fully.
