My main stumbling blocks whilst adding this unit was the Sirius unit not working and the illumination wire. I had a bad Sirius box unfortunately which I got off eBay for $20 so I dumped it in the trash and went and bought a new one and that's great although it did concern me for a bit. The illumination wire was a pain and I don't know if you would know about this unless I told you as I read everything everywhere and nothing was said about this.
On your Z1 you need to connect a Illumination wire up which goes +12v when its on and 0v when its off...something like that...anyway when its on your screen darkens at night and when its off its light for driving about in the day time. I wired up the cable from the dimmer from the car harness to the new Z1 harness because it was the same color and the only wire left on the harness to wire up but that didn't work for illumination I had to make an extra wire from the headlight switch to the Illumination wire on the Z1 harness and that then worked perfectly.
On the images below is the headlight switch popped out and I added the flash headlight circuit to it and also crimped off for the illumination cable that went to the Z1.
Where do you have the rear view camera mounted at? I was thinking about adding that to mine at some point, but the system alone costs enough for me for now. I was wanting to get it in a concealed place anyways such as hidden where the keyhole is now, but like you said that would require a different camera and a bit of work.
Mine is mounted on area of the licence plate, I decided to go with this area because of there is a small hide which happens to be the same size diameter of the camera cable so I cut off the end of the cable, fed the cable though, mounted the camera and resoldered the end of the cable back on with the connector (only a few wires so it wasn't hard). I will see how it goes, would have liked to use the lock hole but the camera wouldn't fit and I wasn't sure I wanted to lose the lock to be honest with you
Thank you
Stuart

Thanks for all the info so far, I think that all my equip. should be here by this weekend and I'll be able to start this install... The link to that other image gallery was a great help, I see where the speed sensor is now- so according to the instructions, you take their little connector and connect it to that wire, running the other end back into the car? I just want to make sure that I understand that correctly- don't want to start destroying wires that don't need to be destroyed... Also, what is the process for pulling out the factory stereo on the mustang? Are there a set of screws you have to get to, or does the head unit pop out?
Thanks for all the info so far, I actually received my wiring harness, etc. today from crutchfield, and it included instructions on ripping apart the dash- so no worries there... Does anybody have a picture of at which point they attached the voltage regulator? I'm going to have someone at my office solder it on for me, and it would be nice if I could show them what it's supposed to look like.

Wow, I totally forgot to even think about it. Does the iPod connector charge the iPod as well when it's plugged in? If not then I need to make sure I bring it back to my computer more often than I currently do.
Thanks, it would be appreciated... I picked up the little regulator today, and I've got my harness kit, but I'm not 100% sure exactly what I'm supposed to do from here- There's an input, and output, and a ground on the regulator, but to what ends? I think I've got a good handle on the other nuances of install at this point, but the regulator continues to confuse me...
OK just made a little diagram for you, just get some automobile wire from Walmart or something and get it wired up inside and cover it will electric tape so the wires can't pull off the leg....I did this with the ground wire!
Does that help?

The Input is the Blue/White amp wire going from the 2nd connector from the harness from car, you might notice there is 2 of them, I personally couldn't find out if the 2nd wire worked so I crimped them both together, still not sure if I did the right thing but its all good so far so just connect the too amp In wires together.
ahhhhh, yes, that helps a lot- The thing that was really confusing me was the presence of that second wire on the harness- It seemed counter intuitive that I would run a regulator in from one cable, and out to the other which is why I was getting so bogged down... So you crimped the two wires from the harness together, ran that to the input portion of the regulator, grounded a piece of stereo wire from that second connection to something behind the dash, and then ran the output portion to the amp wire on the Z1... That seems reasonable...
Well they just finished the install on my car. I will get it on Sunday when I get down to Richmond. They were able to run the cable to the center console through that little cover I was talking about so I will take pictures ocne I get it and post em here. I think it will help a lot having it run there for the iPod rather than in the glove box, just makes it easier to get to.
One more question- where exactly does that output from the regulator go? I'm looking at the diagrams from pioneers website, and i don't see anything there about an amp wire harness... I see a set of RCA cables that it says are used with an external sub, but I was under the impression that the RCA output from the wire harness would plug into there... If I'm understanding that correctly, and the rca output from the wiring harness plugs into the sub out, where does the regulator out go? The only thing i can guess is to the blue/white cable that leads to the system control terminal... Is my assumption correct, or am I (again) missing something here?
Kcary, good job, look forward to seeing the pics, still not 100% sure where you mean but if its better than mine then I might swap mine out too.
Jake, yes its the blue/white from the Z1 ...same color that goes to the car harness. The rca cables have there own connections on the back of the Z1 so you just plug those ones in.
So the regulator would go inbetween the connection of the blue/white cable that connects from the shaker to the z1 and with the connection to ground on the regulator.
Thanks a lot for the help, the install went off with almost no problems- I wasn't able to properly put that regulator in as the subs still pop, but other than that it was a quick install thanks to all the help from this forum... I bought another regulator, and I guess I'll attach it at the point of origin rather than try to pull apart all my wiring to see where I went wrong at that point... All told, it only look me about 2 hours to install, and the headlight bypass that I bought from avic411 works perfectly...
