Default Third Gen Firebirds aren't that fast.

wtf engine is in these things anyway? I dunno if it was a V8 or not...

I was on my way from work and was doing about 75 down the interstate. I get around this truck and i was just cruisin after this Sheriff went FLYING by us. Anyway, here he comes... gaining a bit... so I go up to 80. He's still gaining... I dropped it into 4th gear and hammer it... I go up to 90... he's still gaining... 100, he's still gaining.

At 110 he's not gaining anymore... at 120 I'm pulling away from him. I move over out of the passing lane and go to take my exit and he floats right on by me.

I know it's 80s technology... but what kind of engine is in those plain jane looking 3rd gen Firebirds?

God knows.

Probably a a wore out 305. IF it was a V6 i doubt it would have even stayed with you honestly.

my dad has a 3rd gen 88 camaro iroc-z. it has the 305 (5.0) 5 speed... lots of torque (around 300) but no hp at all (like 220)... Its a sweet car, i love to drive it, but it really has no power for racing. Its just fun to nail the gas a little every once in a while. It sounds sweet though. When he bought the car (brand new right from the factory back in 88) The 5.7 350 (SS) was only available in auto, but he wanted a manual. the car only has 35K miles on it lol.

2.8L V6 is in some of them.

It wasn't THAT bad though, my older brother had one with a automatic and it was peppy for a 6 cyl back then.

There were no 3rd Gen, SS's. There were IROC's/Z28 (305 with 5 speed or auto 350 with auto only) or RS. For the Pontiac it was T/A (WS6 was a suspension package) Firebird Formula (both the 305 and 350 were avalible) and the base model Firebird, there were also a very very limited amount of SLP built Firehawks as well.

the 305 80s firebirds are really slow. especially for v8s. i beat my friends in my v6 and he had a 85 trans am 305. i think the irocs and 350s were the faster ones that made some decent power.

The TBI 305's are turds, the automatic 305TPI's are turds, the 305tpi 5speeds are a low 15/high 14 car stock & the L98 with a G92 rear can run mid 14's.

TPI motors have ridiculous torque, especially when modded and have some gears.
