View Full Version : I need advice
MStang91 07-20-2003, 02:44 PM I have a 91 GT Mustang. I am looking to make it quick. Would it be easier to buy a crate motor or to just build one. I dont have too much money though. Also what kind of wires and plugs r u guys going with

roadtalontsi 07-20-2003, 05:13 PM id use nkg plugs and plug wire...msd's, magnacores those are pretty nice. Motor wise, id go w/ a 351w seriously. Forget the 5.0 crap. Get one from some place that builds them. I know you can get a full turn key one for 5g's that has like 500hp and 500tq

brockleew 07-22-2003, 08:04 AM I think I read that Steeda came out with some 10.4mm plug wires that have the lowest ohmage ratings. Cant rememver if it was them though.

WhiteHawk 07-22-2003, 11:56 AM It would be easier to buy a crate motor, but it would be cheaper to build one yourself I F you know what you're doing.

Usually crate engines have already been tested (the combination of components I mean....to work well with each other) -- If you were to build one, you will either have to imitate a known working one (component-wise for synchronization) or test (trial and error) till you get a good combo.

Sometimes paying to let the pros do it pays off in no headaches, but sometimes the challenge and accomplishment of doing it oneself is worth and lifetime memory/satisfaction.

So think about it, do research and then decide what you think will be best for you.

99dropTop 07-22-2003, 01:29 PM 351 windsor... check it out
brockleew 07-23-2003, 11:18 AM /cough just got my hands on a 351m shortblock...WOOHOO free too
EvilKenevil 07-23-2003, 03:41 PM hoW ON EARTH DID YOU GET IT FREE.
BLOWN91VERT 07-23-2003, 09:57 PM If it is a 351M, you might as well toss it in the garbage. 351 Windsor is what you want. 351M and 400 motors are boat anchors. And bad ones at that.
EvilKenevil 07-23-2003, 11:49 PM Not trying to nag or anything but did it get hurt badly falling off the truck? How much can be used/came whith it when you got it.

99dropTop 07-24-2003, 02:51 AM 351m sucks

This is why i said it fell off a truck!

yellow94gt 07-24-2003, 07:33 AM I'd stroke the 5.0 to a 331 and then bore .040 over to 334ci. Add edlebrock performer intake and heads, je pistons. and taylor 409's. Compliment that set up with a tremec TKO and 4.10's and a 175 shot of juice and you may see 7.0's all day. This is what my buddy has and it kicks some tail. But, I just have a mostly stock 5.0 w full exhaust, bbk cold air, and the taylor 409 10.4 mm wires.
WhiteHawk 07-24-2003, 12:33 PM yellow94gt,

SEVENS?????????? from a 334ci???? ---- Holy crapolaho! Are you sure of that??? It seems too fast for a 334 and Juice.....then again...maybe I've been out of it too long.

Zcpeanut 07-24-2003, 01:37 PM no i dont think quite sevens either... could be though i guess... that sounds way too fast for a 334.
vfast 07-24-2003, 02:13 PM I think the msd wires are great also the 9mm holley annihilators are very good they have only 50 ohnms res. per foot one of the best on the market
vfast 07-24-2003, 02:14 PM maybe 7.90's
BLOWN91VERT 07-24-2003, 06:33 PM I think he mean's 7's in the 1/8 mile. I've ran 8.1 in the 1/8th. 7's are possible with a built motor and some juice. I wouldn't do the .040 over part on a 302 block. .030 is about all you want to go with the thin sidewalls. Especially if you're dumping 175hp of NO2 in the cylinders.
yellow94gt 07-26-2003, 07:24 AM Thats 1/8th mile, I was thinking the same thing about the thin sidewalls, but he hasnt had any problems and he races every weekend. I suppose he must be a lucky bastard. I think I would stroke to 347 if all I wanted to do was race, but I think Im just going to build up my 5.0. I just got my car into the shop having my Holley Systemax II kit put on. 2200 bucks, and its advertised to put 350hp to the wheels with a 70mm mass air and 75mm throttle body and 3.73's oh cant forget 30lbs. injectors. I think Id probably be content with that. I plan to fog it too with 150 shot. What do you fellas reckon itll run 1/8th or 1/4 or both? Definately mid to low 13's 1/4?? huh? Maybe better?
Mysterious 07-26-2003, 09:01 AM Well it just kinda depends on what you have to spend on it. Plain and simple. If sky is the limit, well then We can make it so fast you will soil yourself.
yellow94gt 07-27-2003, 06:38 AM I'd be content with a car that would break into mid to high 11's and still be streetable. Even mid to high 12's. What other mods would you fellas reccommend? I know definately a new tranny and clutch. As soon as I get the systemax II paid for, Im going with a Tremec TKO. I appreciate ya'lls input.
vfast 07-30-2003, 04:50 PM syetemax II does that include the alum heads?...I would get an adjustable nos kit...make it progessive with a delay timer......mine is streetable and in the 10's thanks god for chips
