Default 6.5 inch in Front Door 6X8 Location

Has anybody managed to install a 6.5 inch component in the upper speaker mount in the front doors? I'm not really wanting to install them in the lower part of the door (not a shaker). I have the same problem for the back. I have 6.5 inch coax speakers that I want to install.

I bought some JL XR's for my other vehicle and would like to transplant them. I can fab up an adapter plate if I have to but I am worried about clearance between the speaker and window. Anybody know what the clearance is? I don't want to go goofy and buy a set of 5.25's and then install 8" subs in the lower door. I just spend too much money these days and the XR's are really nice.

well i have a 2000....so i know they're different but i have 6.5 components in my 5x7 holes up front...it can easily be done by you or any stereo shop....i think crutchfield actually sells pre-made adapters for 5x7s....also i have my tweeters mounted behind the factory grills because i wanted it to look factory to PREYING EYES....with the 05s i think you could get away with it because the speaker is mounted much higher than mine....but i regret it because my leg (or anything i throw in the passneger floor) blocks the sound from the tweeters......so i will redo them in the sail panels where the factory Mach ones are eventually....so yes 6.5s can go in that opening......are you going to go with W0s or W3s in the front doors? i think the chip foose mustang that was given away had W0s...you should contact JL or Chip Foose to ask about the set-up in that car

Thanks. I haven't decided yet. I don't trust any of the local installers so I am on my own. First stereo I installed was in 1976. No, not an 8 track.....

I don't like surprises so I want to get as much info as I can before I take the doors off.

I have 5 x 7 to 6.5 baffles made for my ranger that would probably work for your mustang as well that I could copy with my router. I fit 6.5" ID's in a buddy's 97. I have not seen the new ones doors to know how well it would work, but I am pretty sure it would be no problem.

Well thanks for the offer! I'm going to rip into the doors on the first rainy day and see what I am up against. I can probably fire up my router and build a template. It's the depth I am worried about.

I didn't know how handy you were around wood and power tools. Page 2 of my trucks page shows how I made the baffles and a simple enclosure for the speaker.
