also make sure you have a good fan shroud, no cracks, and check your heater core to make sure it isnt leaking or clogged. Another thing to look at is the bottom radiator hose, it may be weak and can collapse when the motor gets hot. I would look into a new radiator, they arent too expensive, I bought a 3 row for less than 200.00. Definitely use a thermostat, I would say 180 or 190.
After I did all of that to mine, it still ran hot. Turned out some genious installed the distributor without checking TDC, and to cover his mistake he jumped the ignition wires one terminal on the distrbutor. .I could never get the car to run right, and it always ran hot. This past weekend I redid the distributor, and wired it correctly, and the overheating is gone, and she runs great.
