If I want to replace the factory 6X8 speakers with aftermarket ones, should I get 3-way ones for sure? Or are there some situations or reasons why 2-way speakers might be a better choice?
dpeneds on the make an alpine 2 way will be better then a bad pioneer 3 way a 2 way will give you bass and some tweeter a 2 way will give you bass, mid bass, and tweeter so if you want very good quailty go wit the 3 way and that gives you less chance of blowing them because all 3 sounds have a its own speaker instead of 2 speakers trying to make all 3 sounds

three ways will typicaly reproduce sound a little cleaner than two ways, however if your looking for true sound imaging and clarity COMPONENT SET round speakers reproduce more acurate than ovals and having a passive crossover will give you precise clean highs and accurate and responsive mids

it all has to do with dynamics, alright lets see the best way to explain: speakers create sound based off vibration and cone movement. with a round speaker stress and cone movement is uniform on all areas where as with an oval, stress and vibration is divided and different on the long sides and the short curves(corners if you will) ovals tend to distort because the wave pattern changes over the cone ...

here's a real easy way to look at it... an oval has different radius lengths all around... this creates different waves of sound in different directions... a round woofer allows for equal radius through the entire speaker... creating an equal sound wave from every point of the speaker... therefore the round speaker is much better...
it depends in my '85 i wanna put in some good 3-ways for my rear speakers, wich will have a low-pass filter on it, but those are really just to complement my subs, and i'm putting a 6" component set in my doors with with the tweeters in the dash, it should sound sweet ass, the rear speakers arent going in for awhile though

You want a high pass on your 3-ways, not a low pass. A low pass will not give you any sound from your tweeters.
I have always loved 6x9s because of the sheer volume of them. My friend had a set of 6x9 Kenwood excelons, and on a smaller amp (200a4 vs 400a4) they were still louder than my other friends top of the line rockford componets.
At one point I was running 4 kenwood 6x9s on a 400a4, along with a set of kenwood 6.5" componet speakers. The 6x9s, even one pair, absolutly blew them out of the water, and cost less to boot. But I do have to say that the componets did sound more clear.
BTW on a stock setup I dont think I would get componets, unless your car came stock with amps. Without amplification components are usless, even with an aftermarket head unit.

I personly like the pioneer 3-way 6x8's for the back. They aren't very expensive for the high-end ones (about $65) and they sound great. 240w max 50w RMS. when you build a system look at the db rating on the speaker and th THD on the amps...those are the two biggest factors in sound quality. If you have the MACH audio package I wouldn't get components for the front since you already have tweeters. What head unit are you using? does it have a built in amp (if your using external amps what is the voltage output on the headunit for the amps)?

I have the MACH 460. After a lot of reading online, it seems like I'm stuck with these speakers unless I'm willing to rip out the whole thing and start from scratch. I'm ok with the MACH 460 for now. It's not bad for a factory set up.
Maybe one of these days I'll write up a post on Everything You Wanted To Know About The MACH 460.
