ORIGINAL: tncruiser why are yuo using 93 octane ?????????????? Because 93 is premium in New England. Sunoco has 86?, 87, 89, 91 and 93 octane, but most other brands have just 87, 89, and 93. 89 usually costs 10c/gal more than 87, and 93 is usually 20c/gal more than 87. I used the Diablo 87 tune first, primarily because that's what the dealer filled the tank with. My first tank was 91 from Sunoco, so I went with the 91 tune for a couple of tanks. Next tried 93 octane and the Diablo 93 tune. There is a detectable performance difference for each tune. The 20 cent/gal premium is cheap horsepower if you tune for it. Then depending how it's driven, the increased efficiency equates to better gas mileage or more power. Do the math. If it gets driven 10,000 miles this year (it's just a summer car) at say 25 average mpg, that's 400 gallons used. 20 cents/gal more for 400 gallons is only $80 more for the year to use 93 over 87 octane. 20K miles/year is only $160. It's not that expensive. My wifes 'other' car is a Volvo S70 turbo with 11:1 compression plus the turbo. That needs 93 from the factory. My bike is also high compression-93 again. Only the truck and tractors drink the 87.

Having just returned from Iraq, I can tell you just how much worse things could be here. However, we are all aware of how bad it could be. Let us remember that a large portion of the price we pay is taxes. The President (which I almost never talk negatively about) says he can't control the price of gas, but he sure as hell could do something about the high tax that is placed on it. You can call gas a luxury all you want, but so is running water. Get rid of all the taxes on a gallon of gas, and we could find something else to complain about for a little while.

ORIGINAL: Blueeyes With the high price of gas, I'm *even more* glad I got the V6 over the GT. Pretty much every mod I made to the engine and exhaust was was good for some gas mileage too. I didn't get the advertised gains, but that could be the lead foot option I added. I noticed that the best thing for gas mileage is to use the cruise control. Today I averaged 23 mpg from home to work, which was all me driving conservative at the posted speed limits. 28 mpg from work to home at the same speed limits, using cruise as much as I could. Traffic seemed the same. My commute is about 10 miles of highway, and 12 miles of backroads with about 4 traffic lights. I can average 34 mpg at highway speed using the cruise, unless I head to NH and the mountains, then it all falls apart. Top up or down doesn't seem to matter much. I was trying to keep that green dash computer screen off so I wouldn't think about gas mileage, then I filled my tank @3.29/gal for 93 octane last night. That poked me back. My last tank after racing three cars I averaged 21.9 mpg overall, in my GT, my wifes Pony averaged 1 better, either she has her foot in it more often than I do over the span of a tank or the V6 ain't that much better in the MPG department. I got 320 miles from my tank using 14.6 gallons to refill she got almost 335 miles and the refill was 14.7. Both cars over a long trip of 380 miles averaged about 27 mpg, to me that's a dead heat. This tank I'm taking it easy, $3.29 per gallon is more than I used to pay for race gas so we'll see who averages better in a week. Either way, buying for MPG doesn'tmake sense for either car.
