Im having a change of heart, how well does a sub box fit in the back of your hatchback? Do you still have back seats? Any advantages/dis-advantges over a notch? or vise versa. Im thinking of 2 12's. Do you still have trunk space for anything? Decent pictures would help. Thanks.
Oh and my bro can build sub boxes, so thats not an issue, im just wondering about fitting.

I have pic but you probally wont want a set up like mine.I have no back seat and no room lol.If you worried about room and want to keep the back seat you might want to get 2 10's.
i just made a custom 12" box for my 88 hatch....it's shaped kinda like a tear drop trapazoid...then i wrapped blue vinal <sp..around it...with my old W-03 JL.
it hits really hard!....this box is ported also...
i would have two 12's in there, but my battery is back there.

I dont have pictures but I moved the hatch cover up and closer to the back seats by 2". My box is square but angled to the same angle as the cargo hatch cover. Only trim a little of the plastic brackets to work correctly. Fits real well between the tire wells on the inside. I have 1-12" boxed and boxed 6x9's on both sides of the subwoofer. There is still space for supplies, cables and misc., .The sound is much better that way as well. The 6x9's work great in this configuration"much better than in the rear deck". And bass response this way is awesome and sound imaging is perfect!

You might want to go with the flatter subs from Pioneer, Rockford Fosgate, Blaupunkt, Hertz etc........they are shallow mount subs that are meant for under the seat mounting in trucks or on barn doors like on suburbans and excursions....i've never heard them so i can't comment on sound but they come in 10"-15" and power handling almost equivalent to "full-size" subs....check em out...i think the Pioneers' mounting depth is like 3.5 inches or somethin like that....have your bro build you a box with the subs firing to the rear....mount the amps on the back or on the seats....have PLENTY of room in the trunk area....or build a flat box with the subs firing up kinda like the one in the above pic but no as big obviously......lol
