Default 351 in a 66 coupe with original 289?

i have a mustang 1966 coupe with an original 289 and i was looking to either replace the 289 with a 302 or a 351. i would prefer the 351 but i don't know if it will fit or not if anyone has done this or knows if it will fit please let me know. or even an opinion of what motor to go with. thanks, kevin

I have a 67' FB with a 351C, and it is a tight fit. To change plugs is quite a work out. I don't know how much wider the 67-68's engine bay is but a 302 should fit since it is basicly the same block.

the 351 will fit, albeit very snugly, as it is taller/wider than a 302 as far as the engine block height and width. It's been done countless times, so go for it.

A 351 Windsor will fit with custom headers and you have to watch out for hood clearance as the motor is a couple of inches taller. If you have a C4 transmission, it will bolt up to a 351W if it's an older one. Among other things, you have to get beefer front spring as the 351W IS HEAVER.

A 351 Cleveland will not fit unless you convert the front end to a mustang II front end.

A 302 would be a much easer swap and less expensive. There are tons of after market bolt on parts for 302's that can easly push you over 300HP.

I have a 351w in my 66 coupe. It does fit and as has been stated it is snug. It was already in when i got it, and if it was me, i would go with the 302. The 351 requires special headers, which are available, if you want headers rather than stock exhaust manifolds. the 302 doesnt have the limitations of special parts to fit. Because it is heavier, you also end up with even more front weight bias than stock, so maintaining rear wheel traction is even more difficult. There are of course ways to lose weight, but in the end, i think the best choice is the 302. Good luck whatever way you decide to go.

Why not just use the 289? With headers,2-1/2" exhaust,4 bbl carburetion it will go pretty well.
Now, that being said, the 351 will fit but TIGHTLY! As stated, the car will be more front-end heavy.

if you have to replace it, then definitly 302, a 351 will be very tight and its not that much power difference then a 351.
