All Wheel Drive Mustang?

cldnails -> All Wheel Drive Mustang? (4/10/2004 5:48:25 PM)

I went to my local Ford dealer last night looking at their new orange Mach 1 when a seemingly knowledge member of their staff started talking Mustang's with me. He informed me of 2 things that I find highly improbable:

-The 2005 Body Style Mustang will only be produced for 2 years.(He said this is for sure!)

-The in 2007 the Mustang to follow this radical body style will be an All Wheel Drive.

I search a lot of forums and I also try to find out anything I can, but I have never heard of an All Wheel Drive Mustang. The dealer swears by it though.

Anyone that has insight please let me know.

i heard about the AWD in motor trend a while ago...it was just an idea, because ford needed someone to compete with since the camaros were gone, so they were thinking about going after subaru's....all im gonna say is an AWD V8 would own everything

VertStangGT86 -> RE: All Wheel Drive Mustang? (4/10/2004 8:38:31 PM)

OMG YES! That would be amazing. You see how fast those four cylinder AWD's hook up, that would be ridiculous to have on a stang. Casper98 and I talked about that a coulpe years ago, like what it would take to build one but we def decided it would be way too much.

nhdungeonracer -> RE: All Wheel Drive Mustang? (4/10/2004 9:08:45 PM)

I would be willing to bet that if Ford did make an AWD Mustang, it would not be a V-8. That's just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth.
I would rather Ford come out with a killer AWD Focus to compete with the Subaru's, rather than change the Mustang to an AWD car. Leave the Mustang alone, and let it keep the V-8 rear drive only set-up. It's sold well for years, why mess with a good thing?

Cuase if it was AWD then I could maybe justify buying a new one as a winter car [;)]

You know, Ford already makes 4WD with V-8's. They're called F-150's, 250's and 350's. [;)]

50fiend -> RE: All Wheel Drive Mustang? (4/12/2004 9:26:46 AM)

I agree. Mustang's are one of the few rear wheel drive sports cars left. The focus is already used as a Rally car, I think it is all wheel drive. They should use the Focus not the Mustang.

Sidewayz6.0 -> RE: All Wheel Drive Mustang? (4/12/2004 4:13:02 PM)

All wheel drive V8 & 300+ lb torque = a line of people at the dealer waiting for new transmissions.

VertStangGT86 -> RE: All Wheel Drive Mustang? (4/12/2004 5:16:19 PM)

Actually yea, an AWD focus would be nice. I'd buy that as a second car if they made one. I'd get a nice f-150 if I could afford it but I can't really.

cldnails -> RE: All Wheel Drive Mustang? (4/12/2004 6:17:57 PM)

I feel that they should leave the Mustang alone, because if they follow the trend to make it "All Wheel Drive", just to compete with Subaru, then it is only a matter of time before they make it Front Wheel Drive.

The current set up of a Front Engine Rear Wheel Drive American Sports car should live on. However, I do agree with the benefits of an All Wheel Drive car, it shouldn't be on a Mustang. Go buy a Jap Trap.

nomocobra -> RE: All Wheel Drive Mustang? (4/12/2004 7:01:03 PM)

they will never make mustang fwd....making it awd would be genius...no more "i didnt get traction off the line" ****

cldnails -> RE: All Wheel Drive Mustang? (4/12/2004 7:39:00 PM)

Of course it's easy to say that they will never make a Mustang Front Wheel Drive...but...

You may remember a Front Wheel drive hatch back that Ford released in the mid 90's...The Probe...this little bugger was suppose to replace Mustang!

Thank God it failed, but, nevertheless Ford tried to make the Mustang front wheel drive. Mess with the body all they want and tweak the suspension, but leave the front engine rear wheel drive alone...please...to whom it may concern.

LLADNAR -> RE: All Wheel Drive Mustang? (4/14/2004 1:34:24 PM)

sounds like that salesman was smokin crack,, i work at a Ford dealer and we have heard nothing of this,,and the people that teach new model training actually know because they actually get the info from the engineers. if the lincoln ls shows up with AWD then it si likely the stang could too,,but as far as the ditchin the body after 2 years that is crap too. why spend 25 years on the same platform to change 2 years after you get a new one.

VertStangGT86 -> RE: All Wheel Drive Mustang? (4/14/2004 2:23:37 PM)

Don't know about anyone else but I was just talking hypothetically, just saying it would be kinda cool to have one just for the traction and stuff. We def need to preserve the RWD V8's as they seem to keep dissapearing. Even if they tried to replace the stang with the probe that's not the same as making a FWD stang, I just can't see that happening, and if they did it wouldn't have a V8.

What they tried to do was to convert the Mustang over to FWD, as that's what all the manufacturers were turning to at the time.
They were going to make the FWD version and still call it a Mustang, but with the letters letters from Mustang fans, Ford decided to rename the FWD "Mustang" to Probe so that they wouldn't waste all the time and money they put into it.
It's a good thing too they listened, because the Mustang really out-sold the Probe. Just goes to show what the performance crowd really wants. I'll bet the big wigs at Ford were glad they listened to the Mustang crowd.

BTW-I still cry whenever I think of how they replaced the Pinto with Escorts [:o] A Pinto was my 1st car [;)]

Hey, do any of you guys drive any SVOs or Turbo cpupe Thunderbirds? I just got ahold of a 93' LX convertible and I'm trying to decide whether to go with the V8 or to go with an SVO/Turbo coupe setup. I could really care less how loud my car is. I am thinking about practicality and everyday drivability. However, if I can't find any parts for a turbo four stang, then I'm gonna have to go with a V8. If any of you guys happen to know any good places in TX to get SVO components, then please let me know.

VertStangGT86 -> RE: All Wheel Drive Mustang? (5/17/2004 12:44:51 AM)

For practicality a turbo four will probably be better off and from what I've heard you can pick up turbo coupes cheap.

The USDM Focus is only FWD...unless you take into account those few project Focus' thats been converted to RWD with an 03 cobra motor wedged into it.

The Focus Rally car is AWD, but again USDM Focus' are only FWD.

Yeah but the Escort was an infinitely better car. ran from 82ish to 2004...Ford finally killed off the ZX2 this year.
