What i mean is IF the picture starts out bigger then the quality should not be affected much

When EVER you shrink a picture down from its original size, the image quality suffers.. MUCH is ambiguous. IF you start off with a 2560x1920 and shrink it down to a 1280x960, you cut 50% of the pixel's out. That is far more than not MUCH. The pic this forum allows to be posted would put the image size at about 1024x480 which is over a 60% reduction and depending on the camera, could be as much as 75%.. Some camera support a Super High Quality image selection which decreases the pixel size then doubles the amount of pixels. My Olympus has such an option and when I use that to take a picture, the images size is close to 3.5 meg in size.

I think he was talking about just resizing the dimensions of the picture, not compressing the filesize.

Resizing a picture WILL degrade an image. Compression manipulate the image file size (not the size of the picture) in that the pixels are changed and compressed. This does not change the size of the picture, just the size of the file and depending on the algorithm used to compress the file, it can degrade the picture quality.

Most people reduce a picture in size (not file size) to upload to this forum, not compress it.

Not trying to stir the pot, but its fuzzy to me too. Have a nice monitor, Sony something or another with 1280x1224 pixies and a Radeon X800 vid card.

Now, if I could just learn to quote correctly.....

Ok, I guess I need to hold class's... The size of you're screen has nothing to do with the quality, its the DOT size that makes a screen good or not. The smaller the DOT size, the better the quality of you're monitor.. You can have the best image in the world, if you're monitor has a large DOT size, ANY image you look at will look poor.

I'm done explaining this stuff... I do this kind of stuff for a living and I don't want to do it at home too.

Ok, one more post… Here’s and example pic resized (not compressed) in order to post to the forum and the next one is a zoomed in shot of the original pic (prior to the resize) of the air cleaner.

As you can see, the air cleaner is VERY clear but, if you try to zoom on the pic resized for the forum, no way will it be that clear.

Ok, you're pixel pitch is .294 which is not that great.. You want to get as close to .250 as you can for good sharp images. My monitor is .270.. The smaller the pixel pitch, the sharper the image will be..
