I don't belive you can stereotype all 16 and 17 yr old drivers,I have seen alot of accidents people of all ages.
Do I think getting a new driver a V8 300 HP car is the best idea? NO,and it has nothing to do with there age level,it has to do with experience,I have seen 16 yr olds act like 30 yr olds and 30 yr olds act like teenieboppers,to me a parent that buys a car like that for a new driver is not thinking clearly, for one he or she is on you insurance,if something goes bad you are in for it,buy buy house, savings, ect, ect compound that fact that buying a high HP car for a kid will be used in court, not a guess on my part, I have seen it used as a case foundation many times in a wrongful death suit. Don't belive me? Go to your public library and look under case law dealing with it,there will be transcipts also in there.
I give little talks and drinking and driving, street racing ect ect at high schools around here I can tell ya most think it's a joke and the picts I show cool,ya till your the one cut in half or in jail being turned into a bitch becuse they thought it was cool to do stupid stuff with there car.
My advise take it or leave it,it's your life(same thing I say in schools here)
Take your new car to an empty parking lot, nice big one with no pot holes, when it's raining, snowing and dry, learn to controll it in a skid and recover,if the police show up be honest, tell them what your doing and why, most will understand at worst chase you out, better yet have one of your parents with ya,if you run your mouth off at the cop then your asking for a fine.
If you are going to street race(any 16 yr old with a Stang or a high HP car will so don't try to say you don't) and just cannot help yourself feeling to need to be stupid, try to use that gray matter beween your ears, don't do it on a crowded street or highway, make shure it's empty and smooth and lots of room,do not go over your comfort level.
If your going to do under age drinking or any drinking for that matter(MY opion if your old enough to drive and join the military you should be able to drink) do not drive even if it's one beer, somthing happens even though it's not your fault it can turn into your fault real fast just on one beer, the cops are just one hurtle to go over, now the insurance companys are going to be on ya.
In bad weather go slow as slow as you want, thats what the right hand lane is for,who cares if the moron behind you want's to go flying down the high way he can pass you if he want's and take the chance of wrecking his car.
Speaking for myself when I scrape up a DWI/DWi or a street racer I feel no pity for them, they rolled the dice and took there chances, the real shame is the person who gets killed for just being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I have to agree w/ you a whole lot. Im now 21 and getting my first mustang gt. Every kid going to do something dum w/ a sport car; the question is how dum? My first car was a 90 mark7, which past 80mph start shaking everywhere. So needless to say i never did much in that car. Then when i turned 18 i got pursched my first real semi sport car; a 3000gt. which at 222hp; was a nice amout for my age. That thing got to 100 in no time, and was very stable. I still speed and drive very "spirtly"...but, ive leanred alot in my past 3 year with my first sport car. Pretty much ive leanred where and when to do things...the problem w/ teenagers is they do dum things everywhere at any time. They have no idea leaving more distance at higher speeds. soim happy that i had a older fwd sport car to learn w/. Even though i think im a good driver (because we all do) there have been times were i dont know what would off happen if i had a 300hp car.
But at the same time i have a friend who just got a 350z; he's first sport car and a fast one too. and i have to tell you..he's pretty mature w/ that thing (for now anyway)

My first car was a 64 Rambler Classic.. and a great car... I ran off of the road with it twice the first 6 months driving (too fast on curves!).
Good thing I had THAT car... because it was a solid tank.. it just plowed through bushes, mailbox's and road signs like a lawn mower through the grass!..
My son who is now 20... totaled 3 cars and wrecked two his first two years of driving. He has no car right now because none of his friends or family will let him borrow theirs, and he has a heart attack when he gets his Insurance estimate on a car he is thinking of buying.
If I had let him drive my mustang - he probably would be dead now!
and NO.... now that he is 20 he still isn't allowed to drive my Mustang!
I'm with you wiz. I had to learn everything the hard way and so will most of these young guns who are so sure they are ready for anything.
I was exactly the same way and nobody could tell me different. Just let them wreck the car and hope that nobody gets hurt.
I am 18 now but i got my car right after i turned 17 and before i was 18 i had it close to 400hp :) i guess my parents just want me to die?? JK i did wreck it 4 months after i got it because a lady decided to stop 2 times at one stop sign :( but just gave me room for improvment on the body

I'm sorry you feel that way MikeHawke. I don't think i'm invincible and I don't think that i'll never crash my car. I'm just saying that if I ever do get in an accident it won't be the result of reckless driving.
The entire reason I came to this forum was because I though instead of getting beat to death by some people, they could give me helpful pointers (which almost all of you have, and I thank you) on how to stay safe, instead some of you are saying thats its inevitable that me and mvm549 are going to kill ourselves and we are too thick skinned to understand the dangers of our vehicles. I agree that with age comes experience but some of you also have to understand that with today's technology and media, the point about drugs, drinking, driving and everything else can be easily conveyed to teens like us so we don't go out and kill ourselves. I also understnad that the media and entertainment industry can send the wrong messages to us, but I am fully aware of what is safe, dangerous, right, and wrong.
The evident fact that I spend hours on this forum everyday looking through old topics shows that I am eager to learn and to better understand my Mustang.
Hopefully I have made my message clear.
Eric

Ok young'uns. I think what the older guys (myself included) are saying here is that, on average, teenage boys tend to drive with their egos instead of with their brains. That is an issue that gets to be all the more dicey when you throw in a 300hp RWD car. Make no mistake....no less than at least 75% of young guys your age would do some really dumb stuff behind the wheel of a car like this. But I also understand that not ALL young guys are like that. Case in point: myself. Despite having plenty of friends at the age of 17 and 18 who wanted to race me (in my mom's POS Tempo BTW) with their little Hondas and Rangers......I simply didn't get into it. I had a flawless driving record up until my first speeding ticket when I was 24 (in my 98 mustang). So don't take too much offense young guys, we're just giving you food for thought. And reminding you of how lucky you are to own such fine automobiles at such a young age. Don't ever lose sight of that. Appreciate these cars and be responsible. You know that at some point the temptation to do something foolish (burnouts, street racing, donuts...) is gonna come up. Will you be mature enough to hold fast and resist that temptation? In the end, that's all that matters. Be careful guys....and enjoy those GT's.

I completely agree with you, and i'm sorry if I got a little out of hand.
I just hate being compered to what the "average" teen does, because I have spent the last two years trying to get away from what is "cool" or "normal" to do lol.

Well, you sound just like me when I was about your age. If that's any indication.........I think you're gonna be a great driver and a fine addition to the mustang family. Those who don't feel the need to "look cool" or fit in with the rest of the herd are far more likely to be responsible and do the right thing. Cheers dude

I know what I have said may be interpreted like I meant that I will be the perfect driver and I will be absoluteley perfect in all respects, but I won't. I'm still going to have fun with it, but I won't do those things until I learn how to control this beast and I'll only do it in safe areas.

i agree w/ thisblood...but i dont know about the whole no burnouts and dunot thing(thats just to much fun)...lol/ just dont do it in a busy road.
Well, didn't mean it as to say "never" do burnouts and all. But I'd wait until you are much more comfortable with the new car before doing anything like that. And preferably do it somewhere that it isn't a safety issue. I just was equating that kind of behavior with something that a less responsible teenager might feel inclined to do and then end up possibly hurting themselves, someone else, or (gulp) the car.
i know how it is guys. my dad loves fast cars so we looked and looked. my first car was an 86 thunderbird with a 5.0 it was pretty quick. my second car though was an 88 camaro with a 383 stroker that son of a $$$$$ was fast as ****. almost killed myself about 100 times. now i have a car that i have wanted my entire life, 2000 electric green mustang with 260 to the rear wheels. not as fast as the camaro but better in so many other ways. the only other thing i can say is be stupid and one way or another you will pay rather out of pocket or with your life. otherwise have fun andbe safe. alright enough with the nice ****, smoke them tires.

Well guys, temptation just knocked on my door.
Hers's the deal. About 6-7 weeks ago my brother got in an accident (hit and run, but the guy wasn't very good at running lol), and it would have cost more to fix his BMW than the car was worth. So today I come home and there is a .....M freakin 3 in the driveway, and I just wanted to get the keys and say let's do this right now, BUT, I kept my cool lol.
Anyway i'm not sure what year it is but its black and looks fast.

I think this is a stupid conversation. If the 16 year olds have these cars than deal with it. Just because your parents didn't buy you one when you were 16 does not give you the right to slam the kids that did get them. I am 21 and am paying for my car, I bought my first stang when I was 18. My first car was a '87 Crown Vic. So I am not a kid. Cars today are very safe, if their parents trusted them enough to get them the car than maybe they are responsible. Parents are not stupid, they know what kids are getting into. My brother is 16 and he got a 2004 SRT-4. My dad bought it for him. My dad has plenty of money, my brother is a good kid, so why not. He has had the car for almost a year, he drives right at the speed limit and has had no problems. I think that the young guys should be given a chance. If my brother screws up than my dad is taking the car.

Here is a picture of a 16 year old that got stuck on a curb near my house last year. I posted it before and I caught a lot of flak because I though it was funny. No one was hurt and the car was not damaged badly. I feel bad for this guy but you have to expect accidents with new drivers. "With great power come great reponsibility"

I can't see how you can possibly get flake for thinking it's funny...IT IS FUNNY!! Perfect example of too young and too much power. Same happens with people that are just too friggin old. Too old and blind should not be driving.
