yeah man, that's too high, I just got a quote yesterday of $350 to install the 3.90 gears and Steeda underdrive pulleys. That quote was from a Mustang shop around here.
I got mine for $175 FRPP and $180 install total $355. I think $600 is too high.
you either got the best connection in the world or you were smokin something lol.
IF you go through a shop:
240 for gears
30 for diff oil (3qts)
~65(cheap end of spectrum...dealership will be 80-100/hr) an hr for 4 man-hrs= 260
total average price for taking it to a shop will be 500-550. 600 is def too high
IF you buy online and just get installation:
175 for gears
24 for oil
again, 250+ for install
in this case you are looking at the more reasonable price range of about 450, which 75% of you all paid for your gears, DONT LIE
now if you somehow got them installed for 350 out the door, you know the mechanic very well or found one of the cheapest labor rates in the country

I have a really good, very experienced guy doing mine, he estimates 4 hrs at 60 hour. I bought the gears. One thing to consider about the price is how much you trust the guy doing it.
Also, regarding the parts, I would also go ahead and replace crush collar, bearing. Just a few more dollars, but it will all be the same age that way.

If you want the work done right than $600 is not a bad price for parts and labor. If you are installing Ford parts expect to pay close to $200 for the gears and another $100 for an installation kit (which everyone neglected to include [sm=oopssign.gif]). Then you also have to consider fluids, labor, and taxes.
Just make sure the work is done by a performance shop with a good reputation. There is nothing worse than hearing a car driving down the road with rear end gear whine.
