Heres my GT takeoff, just swapped mufflers and no other mods. It was a lot deeper than I expected. I LOOOVE the sound! The clip is from about 2-3 feet away from the exhaust tip from a laptop on the floor.

There are two revs. toward the end.

Here's my MRT-Axleback, before the CAI install.

Bear in mind it's deeper than this in person, and thanks to the CAI, it doesn't choke at the higher rpms.

vortex with x pipe i think...
ORIGINAL: 0to60

Finally borrowed a video camera and recorded my custom duals at ignition, idle, rev, and launch. My system is basically just 2.5" straight pipes (with an h crossover) from the cats back, leading to Vortex mufflers behind the rear axle with 3" polished stainless tips. The guys at my local Midas did a pretty good job fabricating the midpipes and welding all the pieces together.

Check out the video (let me know if it's not working... might take a minute to load):

http://media.putfile.com/06-Mustang-V6-Vortex-Dual-Exhaust

Tell me what you think! I hope to make a better video in the next few days -- one that shows the tips more clearly and doesn't have other cars beeping at me! I'll get the tires squealing a little bit too...

Tim

P.S. Would be happy to include this in the exhaust sticky, but is that just for sound clips?

Here's the clips for my exhaust. I used this site because it didn't really kill the sound of the car. I'll have to get some clips from inside the car when I step on it another time...it was getting a little busy out to do that.

Oh, I should also mention that the road I was on was next to big highway, so keep that in mind. (they're aren't too many empty roads by where I live)

ORIGINAL: paulboy16

whats a cut out?

A cutout is a little 'y' that gets put into your piping (typically right after the headers, but I think the guys that have done it to their sixxes did it right before the muffler) that bypasses your standard exhaust. Basically, it just opens it wide up.

I just installed a single Flowmaster, not really sure wich model, but it sounds pretty good, I don't have dual exhaust holes yet and the guy at the muffler shop said it might be more likely to make the raspy popping sound with duals. I will probably go ahead and get duals when I get a body kit. It is pretty loud though, especially if I am running about 80mph on the highway, there is a low resonance inside the car. I am thinking of installing some dynamat to deaden some of the sound.

I am thinking that if i dual it out it may deaden the sound some since there are two mufflers instead of one, any thoughts on this subject? Anyhow, here is the clip, if it works.

Here is a video of the single MRT Aeroturine Exhaust.

Exhaust (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLlbWScTjSM)

IMO, the exhaust is sweet, it sounds really good. It has a low grumbling sound right when your cruising and it sounds great. BUT, it is very loud. I'm going to put some sound deadoner in the trunk to reduce some of the low grumbling that gets to your ears. Tomm im going on a 700 mile trip without it, and whether or not I can walk out of the car with or without a headache, will determine whether should try for the deadoner tape, or return it. Yeah... it maybe a bit too much for me.

But I did some decibel numbers on the car. The stock numbers were what I got as a reading, they may differ from the original ford.com readings, but I used them as a control.

*All conditions done with windows up, fan off, and radio off*

Stock Exhaust:
-1 foot from exhaust tip Idle - 63 DB
-1 foot from exhaust tip 2,000 rpm - 80 DB
-1 foot from exhaust tip 3,000 rpm - 82 DB
-Cup Holder Idle - 56 DB
-Cup Holder 35 mph - 69 DB
-Cup Holder 45 mph - 72 DB
-Cup Holder Full Throttle - 84 DB

MRT Aeroturbine
-1 foot from exhaust tip Idle - 78 DB +15
-1 foot from exhaust tip 2,000 rpm - 88 DB +8
-1 foot from exhaust tip 3,000 rpm - 92 DB +10
-Cup Holder Idle - 52 DB -4 (due to low pitch)
-Cup Holder 35 mph - 70 DB +1
-Cup Holder 45 mph - 73 DB +1
-Cup Holder Full Throttle - 89 DB +5

I hope this helps people get an idea about how loud it really is.
I have to admit, at sometimes it can be annoying.

Actually, when your cruising they're not all that loud. But when you gun it you will here the power. They're still breaking in but everyonce inawhile it will sound a little raspy and a pop everyonce in awhile. I got the exhaust on sale from SLP for $325. But what I saved in the product, I spent on shipping plus a little. Then I had a local muffler shop make a Y pipe and run the pipes back. They ended up charging me $265. So I spent about $600 total, but it was all worth it the first time I heard my baby rumble down the road.

I used this thread and others http://american-speed.com/**********/forums/showthread.php?t=670 to aid in my decision so here's my contribution I feel I owe. My objective was 1st to get it right the first time; 2nd avoid excessive highway "drone" inside: 3rd coming as close to a V-8 sound without sounding like a Honda Civic with a kazoo on steroids stuck up it's ass. 4th an intimidating look. Cost was not a factor-there are cheaper ways to go. I chose the Magnaflow cat-back with "X" pipe (as I will be installing the Explorer Express X-Charger as a future mod http://www.explorerexpress.com/qa/superchargers.html ) If you plan on staying NA stay with the "Y" pipe.
However I ordered the system for a Mustang GT not the Magnapacks you get with the V-6 set-up...less highway drone with regular style baffled mufflers. Fit and finish are exceptional (you'll need two driver's side GT muffler hangers from Ford $90.00) The sound was exactly what I was looking for...when I turn the key she let's you know she's alive! Good luck-hope this helps.

Hey, I havent been on in awhile, but I finally got my dual American thunders put on with an H pipe. I love the sound and because I am cheap and did some shoppin around before I bought the mufflers and before I put them on i saved a TON of money. I froogled the mufflers and found them the cheapest on summit racing for $277 and some change. Shipping was only $9.95 which was awesome. I looked around and none of the muffler shops in town would do the cut out in the bumper for the drivers side tip and they were all quoting me $180 for instal plus tax and hangers. So I called up this body shop outside of town that I had been to before and asked him if he would install dual exhaust with an H pipe and do a bumper cut out and he said he would do it, and to just bring it by. I took it out there and he installed everything and fabricated an H pipe and bent all the pipes and cut the rear bumper. He did all of it for $100. I didnt even haggle with him. So I got Dual Flowmaster American Thunders with an H Pipe and a bumper cut out for $387. Thats cheaper than I could have gotten just the mufflers in a lot of places. I will get some clips on here soon!

That is one AWESOME pony!

I LOVE that exhaust note!

You show "Dual Flowmaster American Thunder Mufflers" on your webpage, but what are the pipes? Are they off the shelf or custom bent? Every one likes to use "X" or "H" pipes on their 6, but I was reading on the Mustang 5.0 website:

http://www.mustang50magazine.com/techarticles/m5lp_0610w_v6_mustang_bolt_on_test/underdrive_pulley.html

"as V-6 engines prefer two separate three-cylinder exhaust systems with no H or X crossovers"

Since you are obviously getting the most out of your pony, what would you suggest?

Why would they suggest different?

Thanks

Okay.
Yep they sound really good. Just watched it.
I was going to upload the recent clip I took of my new Flowmasters but I was not pleased with the resulting audio after converting it for viewing on the net. I am going to try a couple different compression levels which are mostly for video but does effect sound quality.
When I'm satisfied that it sounds good enough I'll upload it to youtube and shoot you the link so you can hear them.

Okay SOHC Bob, here's the link to a clip of my Flowmaster mufflers. It's best to listen to the clip on a good sound system with a subwoofer. To compensate for the low end loss in the audio codec, crank up the bass a little bit too so you can feel the rumble. ;-)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIzfEep8d3E

Enjoy!

OK Wolfey,

I'm getting confused...

I looked at the Magnaflow site... the mufflers look like straight-thrus...
PN# 16605
I see it connects after the cat... OK

I looked at the Pypes site... there is:
*(after cat)

Item:
SFM65

Description:
05-07 V6 CB W/X SP

This kit allows V6 owners to convert to true dual exhaust. Customer must supply a pair oem GT axle Backs to complete. or see SFM68 for complete system with mufflers.
So I could use Flowmaster ATs

*SFM68 (tru dual)

Item:

Description:

Where is the Cat?

if you look at the picture, they attach after the cats so it maintains the street legality of the car to pass emissions. I think its more economical to pay 60 bux more for the one with the muffler and if they are bad...sell them as gt axlebacks and get the flows

OK... maybe I'm just being thick today... Does the 2006 have TWO cats? I would figure only 1 since they are single exhaust in the first place.

So, where does the cat go? Looks like you need more pipes to connect to the exhaust manifolds (I haven't a photo of the underside of the V6 pony - so maybe they just line up fine)

Where does the cat(s) go?

This was so easy on my '70 cougar... no other cats involved.

Thanks for being patient.

STREET PROS

I liked the Flowmasters on Wolfey's, but for the price I went with the Pypes True Duals with "X" pipe and Street Pros.

Awesome!

This baby SNARLS under throttle now! Already gaining support from the local gearheads. Even scared the Hell out of a riced up Acura. Coasted along side and opened up the throttle! He swerved to the right about 6 feet! Maybe he was sleeping?

I swear I got more than 10 HP out of these! On the highway she positively flys!

http://media.putfile.com/0-60-2006-Mustang-V6-331-gears--Pypes-True-Dual-w--X--and-Street-Pro-Mufflers

Saturday, I'll get her all bathed and do some sound readings and stills/video of revs.

I'll try to get the rumble on the highway tomorrow, todays vids weren't that great (except for one I can't show).

I'll tell you what, she sounds angry at 4500RPM in 4th!! The tone of the mufflers change suddenly to really DEEP tone.

Oh, and where I usually average 28.4 MPG going to work... I got 29.4 MPG today!! Trust me, I wasn't babying it either!

In neutral at fast idle they are 87dB, they then drop a bit when engine is fully warmed up).

Doing 2000-4000 rev they peak at 97dB (see below for interesting chart)

From: http://www.astro.northwestern.edu/labs/m100/logs.html

Noisest spot at Niagara Falls: 85 dB

Jackhammer (at 1 m): 90 dB

So, at idle,My V6 islouder than Niagra Falls!

Love it!

Well I decided to go with the single Borla axel back. I think it sounds great, very deep tones throughout the rpm spectrum, no tinking, clanking or tin can sounds, very smooth and deep.....exactly what I wanted. I took this video around only after it was running for about 15 mins. After the 50mi. I drove it today it already sounds better IMO. I'll post more videos after it's more broken in.

Northside Ford here in town will do the duals for $272. Take it to the dealer. Most of them will do it, but not all. There's also Red McCombs Ford here in town who won't do it because it's a V6, and I guess they think it should be left as such.

Damn, too bad i don't live in TX. For $272 though I could get the Ninosport conversion and do the bolt on myself. I think that is the way I'm leaning with this situation. I've just never experienced such an issue trying to get a dual set up in my nearly 40 years of existence, lol!!

I took my 07 to a shop to get it dualed and the mechanic said that since the gas line is right where the other exhaust would go that it would ruin the line and he wouldn't do it. Is he just being lazy or is there some truth to that?

I just had a shop yesterday tell me the same thing. I actually went to three shops and all wouldn't do it for one reason or another.

Wow, where do you guys live? And more importantly, what kind of crappy mechanics are you dealing with? I feel sorry for you.

I've contacted 8 shops in my area (Fresno, CA - Pop: 500,000) and EVERYONE of them said it was a piece of cake to install a dual exhaust on a Mustang. They could either fabricate one or do a kit install. 6 of them would even cut the bumper for me as long as I had a template. Prices ranged from $150 - $250 for the whole job.

So I'm going with a shop that only works with performance exhaust and they are charging me $150 to install my Pypes V6 Mid-Muffler system next week.

Good ole NE Ohio...good exhaust shops and mechanics are pretty much a thing of the past here. It seems most are too lazy or just don't want to be bothered. A good shop around here would be the exception, not the rule. They all want paid but don't want to do anything that might require skill. They'd rather soak the senior citizens around here for non essential maintenance or inflate the pricefor fixing their cars.

Figured I would repost my FRPP thread in here for future reference.

Well I installed my FRPP V6 dual exhaust kit (http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=9910) tonight.

The 90% of the install was a breeze. The bumper cutout was easy, and you dont even need to be real maticulous with cutting because it has some cool metal flanges to put over the cut outs. But a few things to note about the whole thing.

1.) You have to cut out both sides of your bumper. The exhaust has 4" tips, so in order for the flanges to fit, you have to cut out your factory hole larger to fit the flange. No biggie.

2.) The mufflers sound great, but I think they need some time to break in, in clip when the engine is rev'd you can hear how it sounds like it is sucking back in.

3.) Midpipes. Wow. Hardest part of the entire install was trying to get the midpipes over the axle. Normally it wouldn't be an issue except for the fact if you are doing it in your garage like I was, you dont have alot of room. I had to put my car on 4 jackstands, pretty high up and put the car in neutral so you can turn the driveshaft. Without the driveshaft being able to turn, you can squeeze the midpipes into place. Unless you have a lift, it will be difficult.

4.) Installing the x-pipe was a cakewalk. It says to give yourself 1.5 inches when you cut, I would recommend 1.75 inches, at least no less than 1.5.

Overall i love how it sounds, I like the look also. I think it will sound 10 times better once they break in, but sounds great now. Keep in mind when I installed my GT take off, it took a good 1-2 thousand miles before it really started sounding good, so I am anticipating these will sound better and better everyday.

Ok sound clip, It is 1am and I am exhausted, my wife was reving the engine and it pitch black outside so don't complain about the video, its a crappy vid with crappy sound, but you can hear it. Anyway I am going to bed, I will post pictures and better video soon.

Hi everyone. I am new to this site, and don't know much about it.. But I have a few questions to be asked.

I have an 08 Ford mustang V6.(Pony Package)

I would like to convert my exhaust into dual exhaust.
What would you guys reccomend?? What would be the closest sound to a Mustang V8?

well,I think that the FRPP kit sounds closest to the GT, but there are others that sound better than a GT, I heard someones SLPs with a Y pipe and it sounded nice, i'm sure it would be alot better with an H or X pipe.

Another FRPP dual conversion person here. Click on the link(s) in my signature for the sound clip. It did not come with a heatshield for the gas line. btw.. If I was an issue, I am sure Ford would have provided a heatshield with their dual conversion kit.

Link in the sig. I used a digital camera and it sounds like a pop in the end but there is none. Its a corsa axle back with x pipe (dont think it matters but i put onan aftermarket set of axle hops as well).

Digging up this old thread to add my digital camera movie mode clip of the FRPP V6 duals conversion after a couple weeks and a few hundred miles - and a 10-run autocross and a 14-run eighth-mile drag racing event.

The first two are of the previous single exhaust with a GT takeoff muffler. In part One of the second (dual) pair of clips, you may see a lighted bus kiosk in the left side of the screen just before a WOT start; it's the same one in the single muffler road clip. Tradition, you know.

Microphone compression in cameras that only add sound as an afterthought is pretty much compressed, and when the exhaust isn't dominating, the road and wind noise comes in strong. Otherwise, the duals sound good, and you can hear more than startup-and-rev, to give an idea what it sounds like in other circumstances.
