I am looking to buy this 96 Saleen vin#1falp45x0tf194378 car #227 can you tell me anything about it. They want 19k for it with 49k miles. Is that to much? Owner says it is 1 of 7 verts with auto trans.
The vehicle you ask about is real. #227 Came with the speedster package, factory ford leather, black top, and auto transmission. Ship Date of 05/31/96. Last registered owner in the Saleen Book is Mike Castronovo in Oregon. I'm not sure how many auto verts they made in 96, but it wasn't too many. The Saleen Book doesn't give a breakdown. 19k might be a little high, but then again, it all depends on the condition. High Nada guides is at $19,700 and average retail is 16,600. If you feel it's worth 19k, then go for it. Make sure to post pics if you get it. Good luck.
I'm assuming this is the one. That would be a nice find at 19k i believe. Any other thoughts from some others? #227
Hello guys new here, just trying to find out if the car I have is a real saleen. I dont have any other identification than the vin number. I bought it as a basket case, with what I thought was a fake saleen body kit. (got it cheap) But I put it on a lift today and found race craft springs at all 4 corners, a race craft front sway bar, and the body kit is urethane not fiber glass. It is red with black tail lights that also have a race craft logo on them. It does have a black interior with a 150 mph saleen instrument cluster. If you guys can help please email me at Rumble340@aol.com Thanks the vin is as follows:
Need a little more info than that. What year? Coupe or Convertible? Do you know the bumper number of the car? Usually on the Driver side in front of the headlight. Is there an engine bay plague (spelling ?)? As the other Jason (Sowaxeman) usually states-I hate scouring through thousands of tiny font trying to find a VIN. Just give us some more info and we can let you know.
sorry guys, thanks for the reply, all i have is the vin number and its a 1996. I dont know if its a fake with some saleen parts (most likely) or if someone has ripped the badges off the car.
1996 mustang gt red
If its too much trouble dont bother, but thanks again for the reply, and the forum.
Not too much trouble. However, I didn't see the last three of the VIN in The Saleen Book. So, if you can trust my eyes and brain to funcrtion at 7am, it is not a real Saleen. When in doubt, you could always call Saleen and have them verify the VIN and they can let you know for sure. Hope this helps.

With that stereo system I would say its worth it if the car is in great condition and has all the original Saleen goodies with it. I'm pretty sure that car belongs to a former regular poster in here I recognize the name Mike, who had a white speedster with that kick a$$ Mac system in it Maybe he will login and chime in.
Browse back all the pages of the POST YOUR PICTURES......thread stickied at the top and I think you will find him with this car there.
I have been looking at this thread today. I will be happy to help with Saleen history and values. The NADA is NOT a real accurate guide to use for values on these cars so be carful. I have a lot of info on cars that we did not have the space or time to put in to Brads Saleen book. If you cant get me at my office than try Greg at the Saleen locator service at his web site. Welcome to the forum, Mark! Always wonderful to see someone with so much saleen experience in here!
I'm glad to see a lot of active interest in the cars I've spent so much time researching and documenting in my career. I wrote The Saleen Book: 20 Years of Saleen Mustangs, which includes the complete Owners Registry, in 2004 as a way to help people understand the history of this limited-edition performance car. I hear from Mustang enthusiasts all the time that the information in the book helped them avoid buying what turned out to be a phony Saleen, and that's a good reward for all of the work I put into that project.
I'm writing this forum to mention that this valuable resource and company history is still available for sale. True, my wife and I sold out of the initial run of 3,000 copies in two-and-a-half years, but the book's printer (an avid Saleen collector himself) retained several hundred copies for his own use and has agreed to sell us some more from his private stock. Even though copies of The Saleen Book have gone for well over $100 on eBay (including one that sold for $152), we are offering our limited supply for the original price of $60 a copy, plus shipping and handling, through our website: www.thesaleenbook.com. I don't think people realize when I mention the price that this a large, beautiful hardback book of the "coffee table" variety with 430 pages and more than 600 color photographs that I shot of stock Saleens from coast to coast.
Thanks for letting me get this information out to your forum readers. I know that many of them will enjoy their cars even more when they have know the history behind Saleen. I worked as Steve Saleen's public relations coordinator in the late '80s, so The Saleen Book was an opportunity to share with other enthusiasts a lot of behind-the-scenes experiences that they won't get from anywhere else. If nothing else, your visitors should go to my website, where they may enjoy browsing my online automotive photography portfolios, which are Mustang and Saleen heavy.

Brad - great to hear from you Although I personally feel like the Registry as we have come to know it went away with Steve & Liz's departures (2005 was the last year we got documents on production with the cars) we certainly hope you and your wife are keeping up with the documentation on the cars themselves. A lot has happened since the release of the S197 (killer SC cars, 500+ hp E's, Saleen/PJ, Heritage, S302E, Red Flag and American Flag editions, etc...) I can assure you that myself and probably every other Saleen Book owner out there would gladly spend another $60 for the 2nd Edition
I'm sure you have heard it a million times already, but WOW - fantastic work on the Saleen Book
Just so you know: I considered doing The Saleen Book Vol. 2, which would have been coming out at the very end of this year and would have encompassed the 2004-2008 history and Owners Registry. Between my schedule conflicts and Steve/Liz leaving the company, I decided that the smart thing is to make Vol. 2 cover 2004-2013, if applicable.
I have a feeling it will be much harder to get accurate production information these days. It was difficult enough for the first book, and I had Saleen's full cooperation on that project!
Bought a 1990 SC hatchback today. Wondering if it is a real saleen? I had to make a fast decision on it because there was so much interest, I didn't want to miss it. Basically with all the Vortech stuff under the hood and all the suspension work in the rear, those mods alone are probably more than I paid.
VIN# 1FACP41E8LF171113 Under hood and dash # 90-166
Steve-the Saleen #166 is real. The only option in the Saleen registry is 3.55 gears. I don't believe the SC is factory installed. It was shipped 5-03-1990. Post pics when you get a chance.

Mark I drool over you website almost weekly. I would love to have that 1996 Saleen Cobra Speedster. Maybe someday. That's a nice car. Thanks for your enthusiasm for all things Mustang and Saleen.

Brad,
I personally want to thank you for all the effort and hard work that went into the Saleen Book. You truly did an amazing job. I picked up one of the signed books by yourself and Steve just a month ago from Greg Wackett. It is truly an amazing read and I still haven't finished it yet. I think I've about 1996 at least 4 times and I continue to pick up on things I missed. It will be a book that is cherished in my house. As the other Jason stated above, I would be more than happy to spend another $60 on Vol. 2. Maybe it will be published someday. I can tell you one thing though. Reading this book has given me a greater appreciation for how unique my Saleen really is. Thanks.
Steve Saleen did not equip the 90 cars with a factory blower option. The only 90 to come from Saleen with a blower was 90#10. We sold it a few years ago.
The SC is a specific model for the 90,91,93 model years. The 93's were factory Vortech supercharged but the early cars were not.
It is confusing because Saleen in 99 used the SC to denote supercharged on the S281 cars.
Hope this helps enjoy your car.
Jason ,Thanks for all your posts and help on this thread,it helps cut down on all the calls to PAS daily. Some days we get 3-4 people calling to check and see if cars are real,Brads book has helped but people like you make a big differance too. It's not that I dont love to talk about cars but some day's I dont have as much free time as I would like. Any time your in my are please come buy,we always have some cool stuff in the shop or wharehouse. Thanks Mark
Guys I am working with Saleen Corp on this issue right now (with Marks help PAS). I will be posting a request shortly on documenting recent sales values, I can not use a friend told me about a sale, I need an email or a call from the purchaser, stating the year, Saleen #, miles and Sale price and date. We want to collect about 200 sales for the past 2 years. Saleen does have receonds on how the cars were optioned past 2005. It might be a little hard to get that information but they do have it. By no means is Saleen changing the documention and registry.
Thanks
